NYC: METROSTAR TALENT CHALLENGE BEGINS TONIGHT
60 solo singers and vocal duos have been chosen to compete in the second annual "MetroStar Talent Challenge," an eight-week, jury and audience-voted elimination-round competition that begins on Monday July 13th at 7:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - ). The shows, on eight consecutive Mondays, are all at 7pm. "MetroStar" is open to singers of all ages and backgrounds who have not played a major engagement at The Metropolitan Room. The grand prize-winner will win a fully produced, prime time booking at the Metropolitan Room and a professionally produced live recording of this upcoming show. NYC: "THE SUMMER OAK ROOM SALON" PREMIERES THIS THURSDAY
Mark Janas and Peter Napolitano, the same folks that bring you the ALGONQUIN SALON every Sunday in the lobby of THE ALGONQUIN HOTEL (59 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-419-9331 - ), now present THE SUMMER OAK ROOM SALON every Thursday night in July in the famed OAK ROOM of the hotel from 7:00 to 10:00 pm starting July 16th. The Oak Room Salon will be an OPEN MIC similar to the Sunday Salon but with some differences. There will be a $10 cover charge, but still no minimum, no optional themes, a special co-host and a featured guest star. There'll also be discount coupons for singers, special drink discounts and raffles. Mark Janas will be at the piano. The opening night show on July 16th will feature Julie Reyburn as the special co-host and the legendary Julie Wilson as Featured Guest Star. GASHOLE SHOW CANCELLED FOR TONIGHT AT THE DUPLEX
Due to a family emergency, Karen Mack & Michael Holland have to cancel their "Gashole:Hole-O-Matic!" performance tonight at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 ). They'll be back next week.
OPEN LETTER TO ALL WHO HELPED IN MY 19TH BIRTHDAY SHOW
I am just now collecting my thoughts over Thursday night's event - I left the THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 ) with a heart filled with gratitude to all who worked to make the show "one of the best ever" according to Don Schaffer - who sees a lot of shows. REPORT ON 19TH BIRTHDAY SHOW BY SUE MATSUKI
So last night we all gathered to celebrate the 19th year of Cabaret Hotline On Line and the 70th year of our beloved Stu Hamstra at the beautiful WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909). What a night! Now admittedly I am writing as this year's Jeff Matson Award Winner so it was, personally, a gloriously wonderful night for me, but I want to just talk about the show and Stu.
First up was the lovely of soul and voice, Miss Grace Cosgrove (with back up singers whose names, unfortunately are not listed on the sheet that I have in front of me but they were both FAB) singing "Summer in the City"! For those of you who do not know Grace, she fulfills the meaning of her name. She has very quickly become a part of the NY Cabaret Scene by hosting an on-going series called Grace Notes which has now become one of the "it" events to be invited to perform in. Grace, I'm available, anytime...I'm just sayin'! LOL!
Moira Danis killed with her very funny set up about the "history" of all events that happened on Stu's actual Birthday (July 6th) and then went right into a beautiful song called "My Love" celebrating her new CD and her on-going wonderful Petula Clark tribute show. Love the vocals and the dress Moira!
The next four acts are exactly what this night and Stu is all about. I like to say that Stu is a reviewer (although he claims he no longer really reviews) who still goes to see folks who are not the top 20 "usual suspects" and, because of this, the community (Ca-Ching -$1.00 into the pot for every time we used the word last night) gets to meet his "finds". While the 2nd man listed below is not a new comer, the other three were newbies to me and to most of us so Hotline and this show is like our own personal TV guide to the new season (with weather & financial reports included as one person mentioned from stage!)
A young, handsome Ryan Greer sang and danced to a Jobim song as if he were playing a stage in Atlantic City. Someone leaned over to me and said, "He sounds like a young Tony DeSare!" High praise indeed young man...Tony is the BOMB in your genre so, study him well. Ryan will be one of the "younguns" that sustain this art form we love so much far into the future.
Jim Speake has been around for awhile and is a charming, talented man who brought the house down with his rendition of "Thank God I'm Old" with the delightful Steven Ray Watkins on the piano. (Incidentally, Steven got such a rousing amount of applause just for playing...he is so beloved.) With Jim, while I have known him for a long time and have caught him doing a song here or there, this one number made me want to make a point to go to see his next show. Again, THIS is what Stu is about!
Up next was another lovely newbie (to me) that Stu "found". She did "Apt. 14G" which, to us cabaret goers is a (great) staple song in the business BUT she added such flair to how she did it (her opera voice is spectacular!) that we were all charmed by her. She happens to be stunningly beautiful too so keep your eyes out for Shana (like punim) Farr.
OK, so call me a bit prejudice on this one but one of the surprise performances came from out of the house of the Beechman. Waitstaff lovely Becca Johnson came up asking Stu if she too could sing a song...and SING she did! OMG! Becca is one of my favorite gals at the Beechman but who knew? See, again, who knew....Stu knew and passed it along to us. She blew us all away with her rendition of "It's An Art" and ode, if you will, to being a waitress. Her last note alone was worth the price of admission!
The Delivery Girls...Amie Carey, Mary Carey and April Henry along with MD Tracy Stark...what can I say? Goddesses all! With tight 4 part harmonies, these three gals along with Tracy wowed us with beauty and talent! One of them (Amie) was even taking her group title a little too seriously by being, um, let's say, ready to deliver! I am a new fan of this most wonderful group. Legs for days too!
Tracy Stark...beloved, talented, gorgeous, generous, multi-award winning and, like Steven, one of the loudest WHOOPS of the evening when introdcued because we all love her so much. So next up was my dear friend Miles Philips, last year's Jeff Matson Award Winner, to introduce me as this years winner. Let me just say that everyone in the business should have a friend like Miles. Usually when one is being introduced like this, you are nervous and only half hear what's being said about you but I forced myself to be present last night and to take it all in and how he loves me made me cry...you all did actually...everyone who stood up, everyone who gave me hugs, all the emails, Stu for giving me this award, Brooks (Jeff's writing partner) and Sara (Jeff's sister) being the in audience and all my "peeps" the folks at my table and around me meant the world to me. I humbly say thank you for the recognition and will strive to live up to the honor. 'Nuff said!
This year's Dottie Berman Award then went to Brett Kristofferson and, upon hearing Brett's dear friend, the incomparable Angela Shultz, sing one of his songs, we all knew why he was this year's winner. I recently saw the review that Brett did of all of his tunes and it was just spectacular. His body of work is so impressive. The funny is really funny and the profound is just so deep. Angela's voice and performance was a pure moment of sound and emotion that just moved me to tears. Singers should seek out this man's material and fast because we're all going to be doing Brett Kristofferson songs soon! Congrats Brett. I knew Dottie very well and she would be proud to know you have been honored in her name. Angela...we're going to be great pals, I just know it. Can't wait to see your show!
Another fairly new person to cabaret but an oh SO welcome face and voice on the scene is the delicious Raissa Katona Bennett. Like Miss Grace, Raissa runs another fabulous on-going program at Tudor City which is another very coveted invitation. She, single-handedly (well with the help of her handsome husband) is bringing Cabaret to the locals of Tudor City which is putting fannies in the seats of our shows folks! BRAVA and thank you Raissa! She sang a song written by Hector Coris on lyrics (another beloved energy in our community - CA-CHING) and David Caldwell on music which was a tribute to her previously mentioned handsome husband, Garrett. Let's just say that we all now know WAY too much about Dr. Dimples! Paging Dr. Dimples to the nurse's station! ; ) Needless-to-say, she brought the house down with that one AND probably "got lucky" last night too! You go girl!
Up next was another divine "find" by Stu. This slim, wide eyed, sweet, seemingly shy young man takes the stage to sing one of Stu's favorite songs, "Eye on the Sparrow" and he opens his mouth and out comes the voice of Ol' Joe from Showboat. Spectacular! Another young man to watch for is Terrell Baker and again, thanks to Stu 70 or so people now know this!
The 2nd surprise guest is fast becoming a NY treasure. I've yet to see his Neil Sedaka show but hear that it is AMAZING and cannot wait to see it. Jim Van Slyke sang "Solitaire". A solitary man with a voice from the heavens at the piano singing...it doesn't seem like it can get any better than this so who but another NY treasure can follow such a moment?
That would be the one and only Tom Anderson to close the show and boy, what a way to go out! Part of me does not want to spoil the surprise of a song that will take the community (CA-CHING) by storm so let me just say FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY. And, anyone who wants to know how to set up an audience for the unexpected in what's to follow...look to Tom. I'm still giggling over this song!

First up was the lovely of soul and voice, Miss Grace Cosgrove (with back up singers whose names, unfortunately are not listed on the sheet that I have in front of me but they were both FAB) singing "Summer in the City"! For those of you who do not know Grace, she fulfills the meaning of her name. She has very quickly become a part of the NY Cabaret Scene by hosting an on-going series called Grace Notes which has now become one of the "it" events to be invited to perform in. Grace, I'm available, anytime...I'm just sayin'! LOL!
Moira Danis killed with her very funny set up about the "history" of all events that happened on Stu's actual Birthday (July 6th) and then went right into a beautiful song called "My Love" celebrating her new CD and her on-going wonderful Petula Clark tribute show. Love the vocals and the dress Moira!
The next four acts are exactly what this night and Stu is all about. I like to say that Stu is a reviewer (although he claims he no longer really reviews) who still goes to see folks who are not the top 20 "usual suspects" and, because of this, the community (Ca-Ching -$1.00 into the pot for every time we used the word last night) gets to meet his "finds". While the 2nd man listed below is not a new comer, the other three were newbies to me and to most of us so Hotline and this show is like our own personal TV guide to the new season (with weather & financial reports included as one person mentioned from stage!)
A young, handsome Ryan Greer sang and danced to a Jobim song as if he were playing a stage in Atlantic City. Someone leaned over to me and said, "He sounds like a young Tony DeSare!" High praise indeed young man...Tony is the BOMB in your genre so, study him well. Ryan will be one of the "younguns" that sustain this art form we love so much far into the future.
Jim Speake has been around for awhile and is a charming, talented man who brought the house down with his rendition of "Thank God I'm Old" with the delightful Steven Ray Watkins on the piano. (Incidentally, Steven got such a rousing amount of applause just for playing...he is so beloved.) With Jim, while I have known him for a long time and have caught him doing a song here or there, this one number made me want to make a point to go to see his next show. Again, THIS is what Stu is about!
Up next was another lovely newbie (to me) that Stu "found". She did "Apt. 14G" which, to us cabaret goers is a (great) staple song in the business BUT she added such flair to how she did it (her opera voice is spectacular!) that we were all charmed by her. She happens to be stunningly beautiful too so keep your eyes out for Shana (like punim) Farr.
OK, so call me a bit prejudice on this one but one of the surprise performances came from out of the house of the Beechman. Waitstaff lovely Becca Johnson came up asking Stu if she too could sing a song...and SING she did! OMG! Becca is one of my favorite gals at the Beechman but who knew? See, again, who knew....Stu knew and passed it along to us. She blew us all away with her rendition of "It's An Art" and ode, if you will, to being a waitress. Her last note alone was worth the price of admission!
The Delivery Girls...Amie Carey, Mary Carey and April Henry along with MD Tracy Stark...what can I say? Goddesses all! With tight 4 part harmonies, these three gals along with Tracy wowed us with beauty and talent! One of them (Amie) was even taking her group title a little too seriously by being, um, let's say, ready to deliver! I am a new fan of this most wonderful group. Legs for days too!
Tracy Stark...beloved, talented, gorgeous, generous, multi-award winning and, like Steven, one of the loudest WHOOPS of the evening when introdcued because we all love her so much. SMOKE CLOSED DUE TO FIRE IN BUILDING
SMOKE JAZZ & SUPPER CLUB (2751 Broadway, NYC - ) IN SMOKE - a fire in the building has closed the club temporarily. The club suffered severe water damage. There is no floor, no ceiling, no sound system. More news as we get it.

NYC: THE CONCERTS AT TUDOR CITY GREENS THIS WEDNESDAY
Raissa Katona Bennett hosts an amazing array of Broadway and cabaret artists as THE CONCERTS AT TUDOR CITY GREENS has its first show of summer. "Songs for a Summer Night" in Tudor City Greens Park (enter at Tudor City Place between East 42nd and East 43rd Streets) on Wednesday, July 8th, with sets at 6:00 pm. Raissa's guests this month are Spider Saloff, Julie Reyburn, Ricky Ritzel, Daryl Glenn, Eric Michael Gillett, Nina Hennessy, guitarist Sean Harkness and Philip Chaffin. The musical director is David Caldwell. The show is free and open to the public, with an opportunity given to support the park conservancy with a donation.
IT'S OUR BIRTHDAYS TODAY!!!
We've come a long way, baby! Starting with a small Apple II-c computer back in July 1990, with a dot matrix printer, continuous form paper, a box of envelopes and a coil of stamps, the first issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE was created and mailed to about 30 "subscribers" 19 years ago today. (July 6th) This morning I fired up my "state of the art" iMac, connected world-wide via the internet, and began production of this issue, to be sent in a few minutes, instantly, to over 2700 subscribers, backed by a 6700 page website, 2 blogs, 2 TWITTER accounts, and a giant coffee maker to keep the wheels oiled and humming. And supported by advertising and membership donations from truly devoted friends - not devoted to me, but devoted to the art - and the artists of cabaret.
And previous to that, in a hospital in New Jersey, 70 years ago today, at around 6:15 am (according to my birth certificate) I entered this world without any inkling of what would be in store. In fact, I still wake up every morning with that same feeling - expectation, optimism, with a slight tinge of fear of impending doom. But it has been an enjoyable ride with more ups and downs than the Coney Island Cyclone, and more thrills and chills than a Stephen King novel.
We're going to be celebrating those two events on Thursday night, July 9th, at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN - and there are just two tickets unsold. I know exactly who I wish would take those two seats, but I have stopped promoting. The next few days will be a time of rest, getting a haircut, and getting mentally prepared for the show. Oh yes, tomorrow we get the Program Booklet printed and collated. That's a bit of a project. But no newsletter on Thursday - that itself is a great little bonus I am giving myself.
I also suspended my diet as of last Thursday. All that calorie counting and weighing and worrying. I plan to pick it up again on Friday, but I am enjoying these "guilt free" meals. I lost close to 30 pounds (I wanted to lose 50, so I'll keep that goal in mind) and feel great - much easier to tie my shoelaces and pick things up now (I though it was old age, but it was too large a belly that was the problem).

THE CHANGING SCENE OF CABARET
Did you see today's story (below) of Broadway show tunes return to the Theater District? MAMA'S booking manager Sidney Myer hinted at the concept a few weeks ago and now we see it is brought to fruition. Now lovers of show-tunes have a place to congregate in mid-town again - Tuesday nights at DON'T TELL MAMA! The project is starting during the summer, so it is up to fellow show-tune lovers to get behind this during the slow summer period - most tourists don't have a clue as to what a show tune is.
Other trends in cabaret and nightlife that go to prove (as David Kenney always says) "Everything Old is New Again". Have you noticed in my listings the increasing number of shows that are using the "burlesque" format? This style, formerly confined to "downtown" is permeating every nook and cranny in NYC cabaret and nightlife lately - THE TRIAD, THE DUPLEX, DON'T TELL MAMA, BROADWAY BABY - they are all presenting these types of shows lately. And it is spreading to Los Angeles and San Francisco as well.
And, slowly but surely, the "nightclub" style is returning - perhaps best exemplified by the popularity of nightclub-style performances by gals like Marilyn Maye, Terese Genecco, Jenna Esposito, Gretchen Reinhagen and others who fill their shows with excitement and "through the roof" vocals and blasting, brassy arrangements.
Mini-revues - like those written by Hector Coris - are having a comeback as well. New shows at MAMA'S and THE DUPLEX in this format are sprinkled through their schedules. Creative, talented songwriters, composers, writers and singers are finding new ways via cabaret to present their works. These shows might never be presented at the so-called "major" rooms, where decorum is king. But those rooms cater to the "elite" who are usually about 5 years behind the times. A word about e-cards: Please don't send me any. My reason is simple: I NEVER open an e-card, an e-invite, or any e-mails of that type. This method is used to spread a computer virus and anyone can send one under someone else's name. My advice to you is to do the same. TIME IS RUNNING OUT
If you were waiting until the last minute to order your tickets to the 19th Birthday Party of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, this is just about the last minute. On Saturday - if any tickets remain - I am going to personally remind a few folks who I truly would love to see at the show who have not ordered tickets yet. You see (as though you didn't know by now) the party also celebrates my 70th birthday, and there are a bunch of folks, near and dear to me, who I would truly love to have there to celebrate with me.

BOSTON CABARET GROUP ELECTS BOARD MEMBERS
BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists) has announced the newly elected BACA Board members who will serve for the next two years. They are as follows: Ernie Berardinelli, Sara Ann Curry, David Hardy, Christopher Laconi, Eric Larivee, Annie Sharkey and Richard White. They will join Diane Carey, Patricia Fitzpatrick and Stanley Wilson who have one year of their term remaining. New BACA officers will be elected by the Board later this summer. Special thanks and congratulations for a job well done to retiring board members Kevin Luey, Carol O'Shaughnessy, Harriet Goldberg. Tom LaMark, Dennis Livingston, Chrys Alam and Steve Alam (ex-officio).

The JEFF MATSON AWARD - given annually to a person(s) who, like Jeff, has done extraordinary work in supporting, mentoring and giving leadership to others in cabaret. This year we are presenting the award to Sue Matsuki, a lady who has done all those things over the years, in addition to performing, volunteering, and even promoting fellow performers (and attending a lot of shows). Sue has also assisted CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE in producing many of the special events we have sponsored - like our Birthday Parties. As an award winner, Sue will also perform a number in the show.
The DOTTIE BURMAN SONGWRITER award will be presented to Brett Kristofferson, who, like Dottie, writes original songs, but also mentors and gives attention to many of the younger singers in the world of cabaret. His work has been heard in numerous venues around New York City, including The Duplex, The Laurie Beechman Theatre, Don't Tell Mama, Rose's Turn, Manhattan Theatre Source, and Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC). He has presented several revues of his work, including This Love; Beginnings: The Music of Brett Kristofferson; The Man on the Rock, and most recently, Keeping My Composure, a one-night event at the Laurie Beechman Theatre just last week. He has written book, music and lyrics for several musicals, including Insanities; The Red House (additional lyrics by Angela Shultz), The Gospel According to Tammy Faye (book & lyrics by Jeff Dobbins); As the Curtain Rises (book & lyrics by Brent Peterson); and In Her Place (book & lyrics by Angela Shultz). His song, "The Whole Wide World" was nominated for Song of the Year by the Manhattan Association of Cabaret and Clubs (MAC). As an award winner, Brett will present a number in the show, performed by Angela Shultz.

TOWNHOUSE HAS TALENT CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is proud to announce the winners of the TOWNHOUSE HAS TALENT shows, hosted by Paul Sheesley and featuring musical directors Steve Bocchino and David Pelegrene. Over all, 41 singers competed to sold out houses each week, with 3 top contestants selected each week from the 15 to 20 singers competing weekly every Monday night at 9:30 pm. The winners, selected on Monday night, June 22nd were 1st place: Helen Klass; 2nd place: Beth Sacks; and
3rd place: John Michael Martinez. Paul Vincent came in a close 4th. Cash prizes were awarded, with the winner receiving $500. The contest was so successful, THE TOWNHOUSE OF NYC (236 East 58th Street, NYC - 212-754-4649 - ) has decided to repeat the series three more times this year. Stay tuned.

THE 2009 ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL - FINAL WEEK
The final week of the ninth Adelaide Cabaret Festival ended with a record breaking attendance of over 48,000 and 60 shows sold out. "We've doubled our national and international visitors," said David Campbell. Foxtel will be screening headline act Bernadette Peters on its Bio channel in Australia on 27 June.
The opening night of the third week had only eight empty seats in the whole Festival Centre complex, with at least two shows in each of the six venues. The excitement in the air was palpable.
So what could be a better way to start the final week than with the sassy, uninhibited Lillias White and her amazing voice in "From Brooklyn to Broadway". From dancing on her grandmother's dining table in Brooklyn to the shining lights of Broadway, Lillias takes us on her journey featuring songs from her Award winning work in theatre and film. From the beginning you immediately felt her command of the stage and her audience, and knew you were in good hands and in for a good time. Backed up by a terrific funky trio led by the talented Matt Carey, Lillias dazzled us with her rich vocal range and big voice. With a flirtatious look in her eyes, Lillias' ample body did a 'shimmy and a shake' to the rhythms of the music to the delight of the audience.
Donning a huge, dishevelled afro wig she gave us a "show stopper" number singing The Oldest Profession, as the tired old prostitute Sonya from Cy Coleman's Broadway Musical "The Life". Lillias' comic delivery had just the right touches of pathos to create the blase character of the hooker, which won her a Tony Award. For her finale, Lillias capped her stunning performance with a medley of gorgeous "Lilliasised" versions of songs made famous by contemporary greats like Streisand.
The "Carpenters From Kempsey" is a very different type of tribute show as two country hicks Darren and Sharon Carpenter perform the songs of those other famous siblings. Fortunately they do sing the songs well because their antics, bickering and 70's fashion look are hilarious. The audience happily joined in a sing-along of old favourites Close To You, Top of the World and Only Yesterday. The hicksville country line dancing and other routines were appropriately awful as was there 'back of the barn' stories. It was this clever juxtaposing of the lovely Carpenter style singing and the contrasting monotone drawl of the country bumpkins that made the show so amusing and enjoyable.
One of the great attractions of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is the incredible variety of acts presented, with lots of surprises along the way. "Janet Kline and Her Parlor Boys" is one of these unusual delights. This Ukulele Lady from California takes us on a charming nostalgic trip down memory lane of the 1920' and 30's by researching and bringing to life "the innocent and happy songs" that peppered those boom and bust years. Delicately flouncing about in her pretty lavender chiffon frock this cute flapper recreates the dream world of Hollywood's depiction of the times. Rather than the harshness of life in the Great Depression and the brutal reality of the corruption and gangsterism fostered by Prohibition.
No wonder the act has such appeal to us in our depressing times. Janet Kline and her Parlor Boys charmed us into their make believe world. This escapism was made irresistible as Klein's flashing eyes effused a 'champagne bubbly' invitation to join in the fun. Launching into Who's That Knocking at My Door, Hello Bluebird Hello and what was considered bawdy in its day How Could Red Riding Hood Have Been so Very Good. Her Parlor Boys were equally talented and good fun such as when the piano player gave us When Erasmus Plays His Old Kazoo on a wahzoo.
Under David Campbell's artistic leadership the Festival is encouraging and helping established performers such as Mark Trevorrow to develop new shows. Mark's famous alter ego Bob Downe goes to war in a tribute to troop shows of the past in "World War Bob". With hilarious, satirical characters and songs of wartime, the history of war unfolds from the Crimean to the Cold War around the theme and song War: what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!
With only four multi-talented performers we are treated to a spectacular show. A cavalcade of fabulous characters kept the show rollicking along. Jane Markey appeared as a formidable Britannia, Florence Nightingale and Bob's mum. Musical director/pianist John Thorn and drummer Jeremy Hopkins managed some nifty song and dance routines as well as playing multiple characters. Jeremy's beautiful tenor voice in Lili Marlene melted our hearts for the short lived lives of so many young that are always sacrificed in war.
Private Bob keeps making well timed entrances in his 'fabulous' costumes, even a flowing caftan from the Peace Movement of the '60's. The back projections drawn from authentic sources added to the validity and punch to the show's theme. Sing-alongs of the old songs were enthusiastically belted out by the audience with the help of song sheets. Private Bob brilliantly soldiered on entertaining the troops in a terrific show.
I never thought I would enjoy a yodelling show until I saw Mary and Melinda Schneider, mother and daughter, in "Schneiderville". This is the beauty of the quality and variety presented in the Adelaide Cabaret Festival that if you are prepared to take a few risks, new joys can be experienced. Mary is a showbiz legend having yodelled on stage with the likes of Jose Carreras and Peter Ustinov and has toured the world for over 50 years. Mary now joined by her daughter, award wining country singer/composer Melinda, make a formidable duo. Campbell saw them on a talk show and was so impressed with their singing and comic banter he immediately called them to do a show for the Festival ...and the audience loved it.
Comedians, who can sing, especially their own satirical songs, are delightful morsels in the feast of cabaret on offer at the Festival. In the smallest venue, funny lady Jackie Loeb in "I Really Am Lovely" delivers a solo, non-stop, one hour attack on many sacred icons. I thought there was a strong possibility of being struck by a vengeful lightning bolt as she lampooned the idiosyncrasies of the many different gods that humanity worships (Christian, Jewish, Hindu etc...). Loeb really stirred the pot when she cross-pollinated sacred beliefs of two religions to make a new hybrid religion. Loeb gave us a rip roaring act that recalled the German Weimar cabaret comedians 'who took no prisoners'.
What would a contemporary cabaret fest be without some reference to the Beatles so the aficionados turned up to pack the house for "Everybody's Got Something To Hide (except me and my monkey)". The rapt audience didn't seem to mind that most of the Beatles' biggest hits would be omitted and instead substituted with such lesser known songs as Crippled Inside, She's Leaving Home and a most moving rendition of Beautiful Boy. Libby O'Donovan and Melissa Langton sang up a storm with their rich, powerful voices. Mark Jones on piano joined in the singing and led a stunning band to the delight of the Beatles' fans in this cabaret show about the Fab Four and their repertoire.
One of the most original and moving shows in the Festival came form Ursula Yovich. Born of a Serbian father and an aboriginal mother her predicament is symbolised in the title "Magpie Blues", since the Magpie bird is neither white nor black. A natural story teller this young woman, exposed her very emotional journey in her search: for identity; for love; for acceptance; for knowledge and finally reconciliation with her aboriginal heritage. Her engaging inner beauty surfaced as she narrated in such an unaffected and honest way, growing up, nearly going off the rails, realising her singing ambitions and discovering her acting prowess that has won her roles in film and on stage. As she said "The whole 'somewhere over the rainbow' story for me hasn't finished yet as she launched into an almost mystical rendition of the song.
It was a frustrating experience being only able to catch a tiny segment of the premiere of Kate Ceberano's "Love & the Bottom Up". Her voice was as wonderful as ever but it was her acting that I was not familiar with which so impressed me. Pete Titcherner from the Independent Weekly said "What Kate does in this show is deliver a delightful insight into the female perspective of love...the good bits, the bad bits and the very, very ugly bits."
Patrick McDonald from The Advertiser commented that the appeal of the show "is due almost entirely to Ceberano's warmth, strength, humour and empathy. She sells the script as convincingly, emotively and powerfully as she does the song lyrics with the voice which has won almost every award in Australia." Apparently Kate's song journey of 'love gone wrong hits' was a hit, especially with the female members of the audience.
My final show left me with an unforgettable memory of this fabulous Festival. It was encapsulated in a vivid image of the handsome Nick Christo shaking it all about in a very sexy version of Shimmy Like My Sister Kate. Christo, without drag, re-creates the outrageous night club singer Francis Faye who visited and shocked Australia on a number of occasions. Dressed in a neat black suit, tie and silk shirt Christo channelled Faye, seducing us to experience her extraordinary life from singing in a speakeasy frequented by Al Capone to becoming a legend in her own life time. With his slinky hips, flashing eyes and sensual mouth Christo turned us on to what was so captivating about Faye. Her outlandish and flamboyant performance style influenced Bette Midler and Peter Allen. Certainly Nick Christos's highly skilled and finely tuned performance left a lasting impression and the desire to see more of his work.
It is nine years since The Adelaide Cabaret Festival was established and has become a hugely successful and popular event attracting cabaret artists and enthusiasts from around the world. This year's program continued to celebrate the diversity of cabaret and succeeded in attracting new audience streams.
Artistic Director David Campbell drew together a stunning program of some of the most successful artists of contemporary cabaret, along with exciting up and coming artists whose talent captivated audiences. He also challenged well known artists to push the boundaries and embrace the cabaret genre. With artists from the U.S., France, Canada, Argentina, New Zealand, along with a host of talented Australian performers the Festival attracted record attendances and accolades for the quality program. David Campbell has managed to extend the reach of the Festival and stamp his own vibrant personality on it.
This year's line-up included 257 Artists, 108 of them South Australian performers. The Festival presented 133 performances of 57 different shows in 6 venues across 16 days of the Festival opening on the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
In 2010 The Adelaide Cabaret Festival will celebrate its first decade, 11-26 June, so there is plenty of time to plan a trip to the best and biggest cabaret festival in the world. It's a great fun festival!

Pete Titcherner from the Independent Weekly said "What Kate does in this show is deliver a delightful insight into the female perspective of love...the good bits, the bad bits and the very, very ugly bits."
Patrick McDonald from The Advertiser commented that the appeal of the show "is due almost entirely to Ceberano's warmth, strength, humour and empathy. She sells the script as convincingly, emotively and powerfully as she does the song lyrics with the voice which has won almost every award in Australia." Apparently Kate's song journey of 'love gone wrong hits' was a hit, especially with the female members of the audience.
My final show left me with an unforgettable memory of this fabulous Festival. It was encapsulated in a vivid image of the handsome Nick Christo shaking it all about in a very sexy version of Shimmy Like My Sister Kate. Christo, without drag, re-creates the outrageous night club singer Francis Faye who visited and shocked Australia on a number of occasions. Dressed in a neat black suit, tie and silk shirt Christo channelled Faye, seducing us to experience her extraordinary life from singing in a speakeasy frequented by Al Capone to becoming a legend in her own life time. With his slinky hips, flashing eyes and sensual mouth Christo turned us on to what was so captivating about Faye. Her outlandish and flamboyant performance style influenced Bette Midler and Peter Allen. Certainly Nick Christos's highly skilled and finely tuned performance left a lasting impression and the desire to see more of his work.
It is nine years since The Adelaide Cabaret Festival was established and has become a hugely successful and popular event attracting cabaret artists and enthusiasts from around the world. This year's program continued to celebrate the diversity of cabaret and succeeded in attracting new audience streams.
Artistic Director David Campbell drew together a stunning program of some of the most successful artists of contemporary cabaret, along with exciting up and coming artists whose talent captivated audiences. He also challenged well known artists to push the boundaries and embrace the cabaret genre. With artists from the U.S., France, Canada, Argentina, New Zealand, along with a host of talented Australian performers the Festival attracted record attendances and accolades for the quality program. David Campbell has managed to extend the reach of the Festival and stamp his own vibrant personality on it.
This year's line-up included 257 Artists, 108 of them South Australian performers. The Festival presented 133 performances of 57 different shows in 6 venues across 16 days of the Festival opening on the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
In 2010 The Adelaide Cabaret Festival will celebrate its first decade, 11-26 June, so there is plenty of time to plan a trip to the best and biggest cabaret festival in the world. It's a great fun festival!
