Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. NYC: VALENTINE'S WEEK WITH RACHELLE FERRELL AT THE BLUE NOTE

Celebrate Valentine's Week with vocalist Rachelle Ferrell at the THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, February 12th through 14th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. While Ferrell has a established fan base in the contemporary jazz scene, her unique visibility on the pop/urban contemporary scene has boosted her audience's interest in her overall breadth of work. She has made her mark as a crossover artist who's equally at home with urban contemporary pop, gospel, classical music and jazz. Very few vocal artists in the industry have Ferrell's potent combination of range, phrasing, and musicianship (equally gifted as a vocalist and pianist). Such potency was made powerfully aware to Blue Note Record's executive Bruce Lundvall, who first heard Ferrell on a demo tape and signed her shortly thereafter in 1990 upon seeing her perform. So impressed was Lundvall with her talents, that he signed Ferrell to both the Blue Note Label and the Capitol Label, allowing her to funnel her talents through the prism of traditional jazz and R&B. Lundvall quickly set out to plan Ferrell's coming out party via a showcase at the 1991 Montreux Jazz Festival. In the past, the showcase was used to introduced the talents of Dianne Reeves (also signed to both labels), Stanley Jordan, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Live at Montreux 91-97 captures Ferrell's moving debut at Montreux in July of 1991 and subsequent performances at the venue throughout the decade of the 1990s. She first emerged in the states with her R&B debut Rachelle Ferrell (1992), a solid collection of self-penned originals that featured a striking duet with Will Downing Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This. It was with the release of First Instrument in 1994 that audiences were really introduced to Ferrell's jazz sensibilities. Ferrell has sung backup for Lou Rawls, Patti LaBelle, Vanessa Williams and George Duke to name a few. Her prolific songwriting abilities and ability to accompany herself on piano seem only to further her natural talent as a vocalist. In short, Rachelle Ferrell's talents transcend generic classification. There is a $30-$45 cover.

NYC: KIM NALLEY SINGS SONGS OF LOVE AT DIZZY'S

Vocalist Kim Nalley, already being called "legendary" and a "San Francisco institution" returns to DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, February 12th through 15th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. She is backed by pianist Tammy Hall, guitarist Greg Skaff, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Alvin Atkinson. Nalley packs a 3 1/2 octave range that can go from operatic to gritty blues on a dime, projection that can whisper a ballad or fill a room with no microphone, and the ability to scat blistering solos without losing her intense swing. She has been compared to all of the greats, but in the end, it's Kim Nalley and no one else - an unforced instrument with clarity and jazzy musicality, effortlessly delivered, and a sense of humor to boot. Jazz vocalists have long been a favorite source of romance on Valentine's Day, and Kim Nalley takes it to the highest level. Call for cover/minimum information.

THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) presents a New Orleans Mardi Gras Brunch featuring "Hot Lips" Joey Morant & Catfish Stew on Sunday, February 15th with seatings at 11:30 am & 1:30 pm as part of the clubs Sunday Jazz Brunch series. One of the most exciting and dynamic trumpeters on the current scene, Joey Morant works as a soloist, in duet and trio settings, and as a part of larger bands and orchestras, including the Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Harlem Blues Jazz Band. In addition, he has performed with jazz, soul, and rock 'n' roll greats, including Paul McCartney, Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, and James Brown. He electrifies audiences with his dazzling horn technique, skillful scat singing, and humorous asides. His Louis Armstrong interpretations, both playing and singing, are extraordinary. Morant is a native Charlestonian, a brass instrumentalist and vocalist. He is the quintessential trumpeter from the Jenkins Orphanage band tradition of the 1950s. At age 11, inspired by the piano, he became interested in classical music. When Fletcher Linton, a teacher at Charleston's Henry P. Archer Elementary School, put a school band together, Morant began studying the trumpet. A generous benefactor, recognizing his talent, arranged for him to spend the summers of his high school years studying theory at the Berklee School of Music. By age 15, Morant was teaching theory and saxophone to Oscar Rivers. Later, he joined the Metronome All-Stars under the direction of music educator Melvin Hodges Jr., a member of the 1996 Olympic Committee. Known as "Mr. Entertainer," Morant has traveled the world - Russia, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, and Mexico - performing in an array of venues, including the London Paladium with Frankie Lymon and a performance for Queen Elizabeth. He has performed and recorded with hundreds of musicians, including the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band, Ray Charles, James Brown, Tina Turner, George Benson, Lionel Hampton's Orchestra, Paul McCartney, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, and Jabbo Smith. He has also performed regularly with a septet at Merv Griffin's Hotel Resorts International in Atlantic City. In Charleston, Morant was a regular performer at the Chef and Clef and conducted a 17-piece orchestra at the Dock Street Theatre. He is a former director of Charleston's MOJA Arts Festival. He also credits himself with starting the first jazz society in Toronto and having guitarist George Benson tour with him for two years. He has written and recorded with Lee Morgan and worked with Art Blakey on the arrangement of Aretha Franklin's rendition of "Dixie Melody" for her first album, recorded with saxophonist King Curtis. His first recording, Better Late Than Never, was released in 1998. Morant won Showtime at the Apollo and has performed on Black Entertainment Television's Jazz Discovery program. He received heartfelt recognition from around the world for his deeply-moving musical tribute at Ground Zero on December 11, 2001, and in 2003 he received the Harlem Jazz and Music Festival Instrumentalist of the Year award. For 35 years, he has also been a martial artist with Shoto-Kwon Do Productions, a company he owns in Jersey City, where he resides.
