NYC: ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY: THE STREISAND SONGBOOK

NYC: ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY: THE STREISAND SONGBOOK

Platinum Award Winning singer-songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway celebrates the music of one of America's most powerful and enduring musical artists at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) Tuesday through Saturday, September 25th through 29th at 8:30 pm, with late shows on Friday & Saturday, at 11:00 pm. Singing timeless classics from five decades of Barbra Streisand's multi-faceted career, Callaway crafts a loving musical portrait of the icon who once described herself as being "simple, complex, generous, selfish, unattractive, beautiful, lazy and driven." The Tony-nominated actress puts unique pop/jazz spin on unforgettable songs from Barbra's Broadway years (Funny Girl) to her film works (A Star Is Born), from her early pop albums (People) to her later concept albums (Higher Ground) which debuted at number 1 on Billboard and featured Ann's original peace anthem "At The Same Time." Callaway weaves humorous and inspiring anecdotes of how Streisand began as such a role model for her and evolved as a mentor, recording Ann's songs on six of her recent CD's, including "I've Dreamed Of You," the song that Streisand sang on her wedding day. In a night of soaring songs and stories, Callaway promises us a performance that not only celebrates the extraordinary career of Barbra Streisand, but also reminds us of "the way we were." There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

NYC: "DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR" BY WASHINGTON DC'S CLOWN CABARET

The critically acclaimed and very popular Clown Cabaret will bring its particular blend of theater, comedy and clown nonsense to the New York Clown Theater Festival at theTHE BRICK THEATRE (579 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY - 718- 907-6189) on Tuesday, September 25th at 7:00 pm & Wednesday, September 26th at 8:30 pm. The troupe's current show, "Delusions of Grandeur," explores the thin line between success and failure while paying homage to Vaudeville, Shakespeare, Film Noir, French Surrealism and Steve Martin. Along the way, the show explores the past, present, and future of the Clown. Creators Rich Potter, Matthew Pauli and Karen Beriss formed Clown Cabaret in 2010 as a laboratory for physical comedy in the Nation's Capital. In the show, three well-meaning, but misguided, clowns attempt to create epic theatre. The show devolves into Shakespeare, pies, and laughter. This brainchild of the three producers of Clown Cabaret's monthly show is a new narrative about reaching for the stars and spectacular failure. Tickets are $25.

A Clown Festival? Yes, you read it right.

A Clown Festival? Yes, you read it right. I just found out about it last week, when some of the clown acts began sending me press releases. The NY Clown Theatre Festival is happening right now - it opened on September 7th - it is New York's preeminent annual, international Clown Theatre festival since its inception in 2006. THE BRICK THEATER (579 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY - 718- 907-6189) was the presenter of the first festival of Clown Theatre in New York in over 20 years in 2006, and has brought the festival back this fall as the 2012 New York Clown Theatre Festival, performing through Sunday, September 30th. And it closes on September 30th with the traditional closing day Funeral, with clowns weeping and wailing in the streets of Williamsburg.
