Earl Wentz, 71, of New York City and Charlotte passed away at his home in Charlotte on Sunday, November 15th, following an extended illness. He is survived by his partner of 27 years, William B. Watkins of New York. Born March 22, 1938, composer, performer, arranger, and teacher Earl Wentz began his career at the age of 12, playing the piano at Charlotte's Amity Presbyterian Church. He became that church's first organist at the age of 15. Since 1993, Earl Wentz had been the organist and choirmaster at John Street Methodist Church in New York, the oldest Methodist congregation in America.
In New York, Wentz created the American Composer Series, an ongoing performance series in the cabaret format, paying tribute to the greatest composers of popular American music on the American scene, particularly those composers associated with Tin Pan Alley and the American Songbook. From 2000 to 2009, the series presented 15 original musical revues, many returning for multiple performances over several seasons (see http://www.americomps.com/ ).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the "Amity Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund", 2831 N. Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC, 28205, or to the "The John Street Church Pipe Organ Restoration Fund". Checks should be made to "John Street Church", 44 John Street, New York, NY 10038. MARK JANAS' SALON RETURNS - NEW LOCATION

I'm happy to announce that Salon will return on Sunday, November 29 (the Sunday at the end of Thanksgiving weekend) at Etcetera Etcetera, 352 West 44th Street (near the corner of 9th Ave. on the South side of the street) 7PM - 10:30PM. Doors open at 6:15 with sign up beginning at 6:30.
The venue is upstairs in the Restaurant and is lovely. It has a grand piano, lights, a sound system and someone to run them, and has a wonderful Italian menu at reasonable prices. A $10 cash cover will be be collected by an "Etceterette" at the door, and there will be a $10 minimum on food or drink. The prices here are more reasonable, so I'm guessing that even with the cover, most of you will be spending the same or less than you did at the Algonquin.
The theme for the evening is "WE GATHER TOGETHER." Here's a chance to sing of things you are thankful for, and to celebrate the spirit of the Salon, or indeed, any gathering of kindred spirits. I know I have certainly missed our seeing each other, as so many of you have expressed over the past weeks. As always, the theme only a suggestion, and you may perform anything you would like.
Our wonderful co-hosts for the evening will be the ever-entertaining Jim Brochu and Steve Schalchlin, creators of the hit Off-Broadway musicals "The Last Session" and "The Big Voice: God or Merman." Jim is in town performing his award-winning original one-man show, Zero Hour, about Zero Mostel, which opens this Sunday, Nov. 22nd, at The Theatre at St. Clements on West 46th St. at 7 PM. Steve is returning to us after a wild success with his choral/orchestral work "New World Waking" which had it's World Premier at Davies Symphony Hall with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus featuring Jennifer Holliday as soloist.

BABY JANE DEXTER'S NEW SHOW OPENS TONIGHT AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
Baby Jane Dexter brings her eagerly awaited new show, "All About Love" to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - ) for 11 performances, opening on Wednesday, November 18th at 7:30 pm. Additional shows are on Fridays & Saturdays through December 19th, also at 7:30 pm. Tackling the quixotic aspects of love, from woulda, coulda, shoulda and a few mountains in between, Baby Jane Dexter's brand new show dives full force into that which is real - and that which is fantasy. She leaves no stone unturned as she delves into matters of the heart. In doing so, she will sing from the catalogues of a potpourri of great songwriters including, Duke Ellington, Carole King, Stephen Sondheim, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. NEW COVER/MINIMUM POLICY AT FEINSTEIN'S NYC
FEINSTEIN'S has announced a new price structure. All headliner shows for the spring season will have a select amount of seats - based on availability - with a $40 cover charge and no food/beverage minimum. In addition, for the first three months of the season, all 10:30 pm late shows will have $40 cover charge. Tony and Emmy Award winner Tyne Daly will return to the club to open the official season from January 19th to 30th with her new show "The Second Time Around." Following the triumphant run last year of her show "Broadway By Request," Tony Award winner Betty Buckley will return to the club with a new program of Broadway songs she's always wanted to sing from February 2nd to 27th. She will be joined by longtime Music Director Kenny Werner and John McDaniel will serve as Music Consultant. Acclaimed singer Marilyn Maye will make her Feinstein's debut with a new show created exclusively for the club from March 2nd to 13th.

The concert will include songs composed by Jim, rarely or never before performed, from "North Atlantic", "The Duchess of Fifth Avenue" and an untitled musical about a certain girl detective. The passing of ART D'LUGOFF, founder of The Village Gate and so much more. . .
Dear Friends of Art,
In the event you haven't heard yet, I wanted to let you know before the radio and press begins reporting it that our old friend Art D'Lugoff passed away yesterday (Wednesday, November 4, 2009) from a heart attack.
The past five months had been very difficult for Art, as infection complications from a hip replacement left him seriously ill in the hospital for three months. This stress of this illness was compounded by his needed attention to the increasing health deterioration of his dear wife Avital of more than sixty years, and having to oversee their moving into a new apartment just this past month.
However, during the last few weeks, his vitality, energy and spirit returned as he began subwaying around the city for meetings on the development of the National Folk Music Museum, for which he was the Chairman, and working on a documentary film on his life. And just two days ago, he was down in Soho looking at spaces to open a new nightclub! As saddened as I am by the loss of dear friend, I am pleased that he had bounced back and while in his late `80s and was still shaking up the trees!
What can we say about Art D'Lugoff that the world doesn't already know. I had immense admiration for him, when in the 1950s, as the communist witch hunt scared other promoters from producing concerts with Pete Seeger and Paul Robeson, Art proudly presented Pete (with a young Mary Travers in her first concert), and then producing Paul Robeson's concerts at Carnegie Hall. And of course, his reputation as a brilliant producer of a wide variety of music and theatre took the national stage when he opened The Village Gate on Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village, and began forty years of producing the hottest acts and shows in the world, from Billie Holiday to Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Josh White, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Harry Belafonte, Odetta, Nina Simone, Miriam MaKeba, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, in addition to the comedians, Mort Sahl, Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Chevy Chase and Jon Belushi, to name just a few of the acts who performed at the Gate. If one of his acts became too hot for the club, Art promoted them at Carnegie Hall.
And who could ever forget all the classic live albums recorded at the Gate, such as "Herbie Mann Live at the Village Gate"? Before long, he wisely expanded his operation to producing some of the most revered long running Off-Broadway musicals, such as "Jacques Brel Alive and Well in Paris," "Salvation," and "National Lampoon." As an heir to Sol Hurok, and in the best sense of the word, Art was a premier "Showman." And one with ethics and a heart. . .
In 1992, Art was most proud to be honored with the Paul Robeson Award.
In his later years, Paul helped raise the funds and launch the National Jazz Museum of Harlem, and then devoted his efforts to spearheading the creation of the National Folk Music Museum, which is currently in development. He also acted as a consultant the new club "Le Poisson Rouge," that now occupies the space of the old Village Gate, and most recently, he has been very active in the development of the new film documentary based on Art's life and the music and arts of Greenwich Village.
On a personal note, Art was as caring a friend as I could have. Despite whatever troubles he may have had he always called to make sure I was OK and to lift my spirits. When Odetta's health took a rapid decline last year, he called every day to get an update on her condition and for me to tell her that he was thinking of her. I loved his stories about his adventures while stationed in China during WWII, his family history in Palestine and Israel which went back hundreds of years, and his early days struggling as a promoter in the Village. Art was and is a good friend. I will miss his calls, I will miss his mischievous smile whenever telling a humorous story. I will miss the warmth of his spirit,
Art is survived by Avital, their three daughters and son, Sharon, Dahlia, Racheal, and Raphael, and a large extended family.

Before long, he wisely expanded his operation to producing some of the most revered long running Off-Broadway musicals, such as "Jacques Brel Alive and Well in Paris," "Salvation," and "National Lampoon." As an heir to Sol Hurok, and in the best sense of the word, Art was a premier "Showman." And one with ethics and a heart. . .
In 1992, Art was most proud to be honored with the Paul Robeson Award.
In his later years, Paul helped raise the funds and launch the National Jazz Museum of Harlem, and then devoted his efforts to spearheading the creation of the National Folk Music Museum, which is currently in development. He also acted as a consultant the new club "Le Poisson Rouge," that now occupies the space of the old Village Gate, and most recently, he has been very active in the development of the new film documentary based on Art's life and the music and arts of Greenwich Village.
On a personal note, Art was as caring a friend as I could have. Despite whatever troubles he may have had he always called to make sure I was OK and to lift my spirits. When Odetta's health took a rapid decline last year, he called every day to get an update on her condition and for me to tell her that he was thinking of her. I loved his stories about his adventures while stationed in China during WWII, his family history in Palestine and Israel which went back hundreds of years, and his early days struggling as a promoter in the Village. Art was and is a good friend. I will miss his calls, I will miss his mischievous smile whenever telling a humorous story. I will miss the warmth of his spirit,
Art is survived by Avital, their three daughters and son, Sharon, Dahlia, Racheal, and Raphael, and a large extended family.

THE VILLAGE GATE was a nightclub at the corner of Thompson and Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, New York. Art opened the club in 1958, on the ground floor and basement of 158 Bleecker Street. The large 1896 Chicago School structure by architect Ernest Flagg was known at the time as Mills House No. 1 and served as a flophouse for transient men. He has taken some work with him and is on top of things from his room (with a great view.) Tim Flannery Celebration of Life set for October 19th
A few weeks ago the cabaret community lost a true artist. Timmy Flannery was sound and light designer for the Algonquin's Oak Room for more than 10 years, and at Rainbow and Stars before that. His gifts will be missed by every performer that had the joy of working with him. There will be a celebration of his life and talents at NB LOUNGE at the LOMBARDY HOTEL (109 East 56th Street, NYC - 212-750-5656 - ) on Monday, October 19th at 5:00 pm.

The Light the Night charity concert will take place on Monday, October 19th at 7.30 pm at the CITY RECITAL HALL (Angel Place, Sydney, NSW, AUS - 02 8256 2222 - ). Now in its fifth year, Light the Night has become an extremely popular annual charity concert. To date, funds raised at this event have exceeded $200,000 and all proceeds go towards leukemia research.
Light the Night is inspired by Matthew Rennie, a brave young man who fought a three year battle against leukemia. Unfortunately Matthew passed away in October 2007, shortly before that year's concert. Light the Night was created by Matthew's two brothers, musical theatre performers Shaun Rennie and Adam Rennie, and friends Monica Smith and Greg Smith.
Performers already confirmed include Australia's king of swing David Campbell, pop sensation Andy Bull, extraordinary jazz vocalist Emma Pask, guitar sensation Nathan Cavaleri, breathtaking singer/actress Ursula Yovich, opera virtuoso and winner of Australia's Got Talent Mark Vincent, country singer-songwriter Amber Lawrence, stars of the musical WICKED Rob Mills and Lucy Durack, and cast members of the sensational Broadway musical Avenue Q, songstress Katie Noonan, charismatic singer/songwriter Lior, Australian Idol sensation Matt Corby, Australia's leading man of musical theatre David Harris, musical comedy act Tripod, contemporary a cappella group The Idea of North and musical theatre stars Christie Whelan and Monique Montez.

Its a big week for cabaret in NYC (and Chicago, too).
Its a big week for cabaret in NYC (and Chicago, too). Monday was the first night of our TOWNHOUSE HAS TALENT contest - see info above and in the listings - and CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals - http://www.chicagocabaret.org/ ) will present its eleventh anniversary Gala Benefit 2009 "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" on Sunday, October 11th at 7:00 pm at THE PARK WEST in Chicago - see details in listings below.
Also, this week NYC plays host to the 20th Annual MABEL MERCER CABARET CONVENTION at JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER - Wednesday through Friday, with shows each night at 6:00 pm - ending in time for many folks to have a quick supper and see a cabaret show. These events used to be held over 5 nights and one afternoon, but several forces have affected the event. Economic forces for one - ticket prices were at one time kept low (in the $15-$25 range) in order to allow folks of all incomes to afford to see one or more of the shows. Most of the performers in the shows still appear for free (many hiring their own accompanists) and only a few from outside NYC are given travel/housing while in town. But other expenses (and inflation) have required increased prices, and while some $25 seats are available, most seats are at the $50/$100 levels. And other "cabaret festival" events in NYC during the year have also diminished the specialness of the cabaret convention. Finally, the cabaret audience of today has moved beyond "great American Songbook" that the convention emphasizes and on to many new styles and formats for cabaret show. In the early years, it was nearly impossible to get tickets to several of the nights just a few days after they went on sale - today, seats are still available for all shows.
But the aura of "convention week" still brings a bit of excitement and revitalization to the NYC cabaret community, and folks from out of town still make the trip to NYC (albiet a shorter stay). And, while the new JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER facilities do not afford the space for the camaraderie pre and post show as the former THE TOWN HALL location (including the chance to purchase CDs by the performers during intermission), it still is a time of celebration of the most exciting art form ever created.
