ARE YOU LIMITING YOUR AUDIENCE TO "FRIENDS & FOLLOWERS"?

Are you limiting your audience to "friends & followers"? If cabaret is going to thrive and grow (especially in these troubled financial times) we need new faces in the audience as well as on the stage. It may be easy to pack your room with friends, family, and other local cabaret organization members, but that's like "preaching to the choir". If you are serious about your talent and confident of your craft, you must reach out to new folks - even cabaret "newbies".

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE has 2,700+ subscribers, of which I estimate about 25% are performers or "in the business". The rest are folks who would attend more cabaret shows, and take guests along, if they can be sure they will enjoy quality entertainment (with the emphasis on both words). Create a good show, let folks know, and they will come.

So if you're a performer, make your show interesting and exciting, and then write up a great press release about it and send it in so I can pass the word along to the 75% of our readers who are looking to be entertained.

Do not send a release like this one (received recently): "[performer] will be presenting his new show at [venue] on [date & time]. The show is an eclectic collection of songs from the Great American Songbook. [cover & minimum]." That was it! Word for word! Exciting? Enticing? Worth a $20 cover? Could be, but how can you tell from just that? And this was from a professional publicist, who probably charged a pretty penny to send it out!

An announcement like that might work if it was sent to followers on FaceBook or Twitter or members of an e-mail group list who know who the performer is, the quality of their work, etc. But to the general public, or even to other cabaret lovers eager to attend great shows, its only worthy of a passing glance.
Your press release should include: Title of show - Dates & times of performance - Venue (including address, reservation phone number and website url) - Performer name(s) - Musical director - Director - Cover Charge - Minimum - plus short description of the show and short bio of the principal performer(s). A headshot jpg sent as an attachment will attract more readers to your item.

More than simply a performer, Feinstein is nationally recognized for his commitment to celebrating America's popular song and preserving its legacy for the next generation. Barbara Cook - considered "Broadway's favorite ingenue" during the heyday of the Broadway musical - launched a second career as a concert and recording artist soaring from one professional peak to another. Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night in September at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a $15 minimum.

Mary Wilson is bringing her 'Supreme' and 'Up Close' show to RRAZZ ROOM at THE HOTEL NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-394-1189) on Wednesday through Sunday, September 22nd through 26th at 8:00 pm (7:00 pm on Sunday). Many fans remember Ms. Wilson for her 12 No. 1 hits with the Supremes. At the same time, Ms. Wilson has cultivated many new fans with her evening of jazz and popular standards, "Up Close." This time around, those fans lucky enough to be in the San Francisco area this September can see a little of both. Ms. Wilson will bring back hits from the '60s and '70s and will belt out her favorite classic ballads. Cover is $40-$55 with a 2-drink minimum.

TODAY IN NYC: EDDIE BRUCE RETURNS WITH THE ANTHONY NEWLEY SONGBOOK

Eddie Bruce brings his personal tribute to Anthony Newley to New York debuting "Once in a Lifetime ... The Anthony Newley Songbook" at FEINSTEIN'S at the Regency Hotel (540 Park Avenue, NYC - 212-339-4095) on Sunday, September 26th at 8:30 pm. Bruce presents the essence of Anthony Newley in his show featuring his hits and his dramatic, Broadway soul-searching music. The show includes such light-hearted songs as "On a Wonderful Day like Today" (from "The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of The Crowd") and "Candy Man" (From "Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory"). Bruce also sings songs that come from the more pensive side of Newley like "What Kind of Fool Am I?" and "Once in a Lifetime" (both from "Stop the World I Want to Get Off."). There is a $30-$50 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

kef theatrical productions is thrilled to announce the return ofGURLAND AND FARLEY SING RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN. The one-night only performance will take place at 7:00 pm on Sunday, September 26th at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909). The show features David Gurland and Brian Farley with music direction by Tracey Stark. GURLAND AND FARLEY SING RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN features award winning vocalists Brian Farley and David Gurland. The two return for just one performances of their first full show together. Already great interpreters of the American Popular songbook, this is the pair's first foray into the catalog of arguably the greatest songwriting team in history. The show features songs from Carousel, The Sound of Music, The King and I, one of the biggest Broadway hits, South Pacific, and many more. The show twice previously played the Laurie Beechman Theatre to packed houses and ecstatic reviews. There is a $15 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
