NYC PICK: RAVEN O SPENDS MORE NIGHTS WITH YOU (Tuesdays through August 31st)

NYC: RAVEN O SPENDS MORE NIGHTS WITH YOU

After a thrilling 2-night series this winter, the legendary NYC performer Raven ORaven O returns with his one-man show, One Night With You - an autobiographical look at his life in story and song - to THE BLEEKER STREET THEATER (45 Bleecker Street, NYC - TKTS: ) on Tuesday nights at 8:00 pm starting on May 18th through August 31st. Known worldwide for his starring role in Cirque Du Soleil's Zumanity, Raven O is a master at captivating audiences. On stage, he is the son of the devil one minute, a soul wrenching swan singer the next. His performances are fearless, provocative and often times off-the-wall. At 18, he entered and won a dance contest with a first place prize being a roundtrip ticket to New York City. He later learned the organizers did not have enough money to cover a return trip. They offered Raven O a one-way ticket and he took it - never looking back. He soon became a fixture in the East Village club world. He sung in dark, seedy underground cabarets and burlesque theatre houses. Cirque Du Soleil was a major turning point for the performer. The troupe invited Raven O to host their Zumanity show in Las Vegas. In 2007, after three long years in Las Vegas, Raven O returned to his love - New York City. Raven O is currently preparing to release his first musical CD this summer. For information, ticket price & reservations, go to http://www.telecharge.com/ .

NYC PICK: BARB JUNGR CELEBRATES U.S. RELEASE OF "THE MEN I LOVE" - Opening Night

NYC: BARB JUNGR CELEBRATES U.S. RELEASE OF "THE MEN I LOVE"

To celebrate the USA release of her new CD "The Men I Love," from NAIM Label (distributed in the U.S. by Allegro) on May 11, Barb Jungr returns to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) for a one-week engagement, Tuesday through Sunday, May 18th through 23rd at 7:30 pm (7:00 pm on Tuesday & Sunday). Her new show, "River," is her eighth engagement at The Metropolitan Room since she first performed there in 2007. The show is a collection of iconic songs from the late 20th century that rarely are heard in jazz and cabaret rooms and includes a number of standouts from last year's acclaimed show "The Men I Love". Jungr, who is best known for her amazing deconstructions of songs by American rockers, has subtitled the new album "The New American Songbook." Jungr implies with her eye-opening interpretations (that reveal latent emotional content when she dislodges the songs from their original contexts), that many American songwriters from the rock era and beyond are not a breed apart from their predecessors like Gershwin, Kern, Mercer and Berlin. Is it right to have already closed the book (or the door) on the Great American Songbook? Jungr believes it is still being written and that Dylan, Springsteen and Cohen can comfortably sit beside Porter and the rest. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: Booth & Pat: Two Guys, One Guitar, No Standards

NYC: Booth & Pat: Two Guys, One Guitar, No Standards
MEMBER DISCOUNT - $5 OFF THE COVER

After taking the East Coast by storm, the irreverent music/comedy stylings of Booth & Pat (Booth Daniels & Patrick Frankfort) are heading to the Hollywood Fringe 2010! But before they go, they're stopping off atDON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - ) on Thursday, June 3rd at 7:30 & Saturday, June 5th at 7:00 pm. Booth & Pat present an hour of song, shtick and sketch idiotic in its observations, but ridiculous in its infectiousness. From the original and insightful "Where Have All the Straight Girls Gone?" lamenting Pat's ability to convert the women he dates into lesbians, to a skewering of the beloved "Let It Be", to a parody of Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack" where the undynamic duo dream of all the outdated things they could make stylish (#I'm bringing dial-up back / Those slow connections are where it's at#). It's like Entourage. Minus the cars. And the money. And the HBO contract. But with singing! There is a $10 cover plus a 2-drink minimum. $5 cover for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

[Booth & Pat: Two Guys, One Guitar, No Standards will also be appearing as part of HOLLYWOOD FRINGE at COMEDYSPORTZ LA (733 Seward Street, Hollywood, CA - TKTS: 866-811-4111 -http://www.hollywoodfringe.org/ ) on Wednesday & Thursday, June 21st & 22nd at 7:00 pm, Friday, June 23rd at 3:00 pm, Saturday, June 24th at 5:00 pm and Sunday, June 25th at 9:00 pm - tickets will be $20.]

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II - BLOG EDITION

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

We passed the 70 mark on 2010-2011 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE memberships over the weekend, but we still have a long way to go in reaching our goal of 200 members by July 5th, when all 2009-2010 memberships expire. And still more than half the memberships recorded for 2010-2011 were carry-over free memberships for the folks who joined CABARET FOR SENIORS last year and were promised a 1-year extension of their memberships. This has put a little hold on plans for our 20th Anniversary Party in July. We'll still have some type of celebration but I don't want to reserve a venue until I get some type of indication as to where we will stand on member support. Amazingly, 15 of the 70 members are actually brand new members or folks who haven't been members in more than 2 years! Welcome aboard! You can check at the top of this issue for some of the details on membership or just click on the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page. 2010-2011 Membership cards are valid immediately and good through July 5th, 2011. New members get several extra weeks of membership no extra charge.

Once again (except for an item received just a few minutes ago) we have included in this issue all the cabaret news items for which releases have been received through May, and even to June 6th. Of course, we haven't received any schedules from the cabaret venues yet for June - they should be rolling in this week so there may be more items for the first week in June in Thursday's issue.

Every day we move all the shows from our CABARET LISTINGS for that date to the home (index) page of the website and then a few hours later we post our special picks of the day from that list to the blog , and at the same time we post a note on TWITTER on each pick with a link to the item on the blog. The Twitter feed also appears on the home page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website if you want to see what other items we're promoting - we add to our Twitter feed items of cabaret interest we find on other Twitter feeds. If you join and follow us on Twitter, we'll pass along your cabaret-related news to our almost 300 followers as well.

I have a busy week planned - restricted only by my ability to afford same, with plans to catch Maureen Kelley Stewart's show at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN on Tuesday, and Tanya Moberly's show at DON'T TELL MAMA at 9:15 pm on Wednesday. On Thursday I plan to catch Barb Jungr at 7:30 pm at the METROPOLITAN ROOM, followed by a quick jog to THE DUPLEX for MargOH Channing's show at 9:30 pm. OK, I'm kidding about the jog. I can catch the F train at 23rd & Sixth and get to West 4th Street in minutes (its only 2 stops) and walk the block to THE DUPLEX. By Friday I'll probably be out of energy and/or cash so I'm not planning beyond Thursday right now.

See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2010-2011. Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support. Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!
Look for more news on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ), on the blog ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) and updates, picks & reminders on TWITTER ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ).

And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about but we've run out of space so the rest will have to wait until Thursday's issue. Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!

HERE & THERE - PART I - BLOG EDITION

HERE & THERE - PART I

It was such a great weekend I nearly had to chain myself to the computer to get my work done! And you will note from the next item that there was work to do galore! It's supposed to rain tomorrow here in NYC, but then really warm up for next weekend.

Be careful what you ask for. Last Thursday I discovered that I had used up all the unpublished cabaret news items for May - but from the venue schedules I received, I knew there were a lot more shows for which I had no press releases. So I sent out an e-mail blast to all on the MAC group & Cabaretsingers group lists urging them to send in their releases so I could spread the word on their behalf to the 2700 subscribers to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE and publish on the 6700 page website. Overnight 206 emails were received (nearly all from non-subscribers) as well as 15 new subscriber requests! All I can say is, in spite of what you hear, cabaret is alive and well and living all over the world!
Want some tips on getting your item included in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter and on the website? Just click here

Ricky Ritzel has announced that a memorial for his son, 'RYAN RITZEL: A CELEBRATION OF LIFE' will take place at the IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121 - ) on Tuesday, May 25th at 3:00 pm.

Thoughts and prayers go out on behalf of Joe Regan Jr.'s good friend Frank Levandoski, who has been hospitalized for some time at Lennox Hill and now some complications have arisen. The situation is very serious. Frank was given the last rites early this morning. We will try to keep this item updated - and after the newsletter goes out we will keep you informed on Twitter and also on the blog- as well as the message board on the website.

In an "exclusive" report on Playbill.com (By Andrew Gans - 14 May 2010), it was reported that the 21st Annual New York Cabaret Convention, which "salutes the best in Manhattan cabaret", will be held once again at FREDERICK P. ROSE HALL (Columbus Circle, Broadway at 60th Street, NYC - CenterCharge: 212-721-6500 - ) on Thursday through Saturday, October 7th through 9th. Elaine Stritch will host a Noel Coward Evening on Friday the 8th. More details athttp://www.mabelmercer.org/ . This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Mabel Mercer Foundation's establishment. Ticket order forms will be mailed out in June.

Folks in the San Francisco area have a great reason to join as CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members in the next few days. Russ Lorenson is doing a show from Thursday, May 27th through Sunday, June 27th at THE EUREKA THEATER (215 Jackson Street, San Francisco, CA - TKKTS: 415-674-3863 -http://www.brownpapertickets.com/ ). He's bringing his award winning "Benedetto/Blessed: A Tribute to the Life and Music of Tony Bennett" to THE EUREKA on Thursdays through Sundays (details in the listings section of the website). But here's the kicker: Tickets are $30 at the door, but members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (must show your card) pay just $10! As Gretchen's grandma would say, "How do you like them apples!"
