SAN DIEGO, CA: SHARON MCNIGHT'S "TWISTED XMAS" RETURNS

Tony-nominee Sharon McNight returns just in time with her annual "Twisted Xmas" Holiday Show and this year she's gonna "sleigh" you. It's an irreverent look at the traditions of the season. She will perform at ROCKWELL: TABLE & STAGE (1714 Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA - 323-669-1550) on Tuesday, December 16th at 8:00 pm. "Twisted Xmas" is a different kind of holiday show. If you're looking for a warm and cozy show filled with the traditional carols, look elsewhere. This is definitely not Donny & Marie's Christmas Program. Over the past decades, during the holidays, while Rosemary Clooney touted a "White Christmas" and Bruce Vilanch roasted his chestnuts over an open fire, McNight offered an alternative choice from the expected songs. She has stockpiled myriad and outrageous, wacky musical commentaries on the 12 days of everything from Santa, elves, gift wrapping, toys, cold, weather, snow and let's not forget "the family." Call for cover/minimum information.

TORONTO: SAM BROVERMAN: A JEWISH BOY'S CHRISTMAS
White Christmas. Let it Snow. Baby It's Cold Outside. Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer. What do these popular Christmas songs have in common (aside from driving you crazy while you do your Christmas shopping)? Some of the most popular Christmas songs of all time (5 of the top 10, according to ASCAP) were written by Jewish songwriters like Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne, Frank Loesser, and Johnny Marks. This holiday season, Toronto jazz singer Sam Broverman will again explore and celebrate what it means to be a "Jewish boy" at Christmas time (last year's show was sold out) at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, December 14th at 7:00 pm. In A Jewish Boy's Christmas, Sam recalls his own experiences as a Jewish boy in the very ethnically mixed north end of Winnipeg, and ties them to the Jewish influence on the Great American Christmas songbook in stories and songs, with a few surprises. With Jordan O'Connor on bass, Peter Hill on piano, and guest singer Whitney Ross-Barris (of whom Sam will ask the musical question Can I Interest You In Hannukah? (be there to hear her answer), plus a special appearance by members of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. A Jewish Boy's Christmas promises to be a hilarious and touching holiday night out whether you celebrate Christmas or Hannukah ... or none of the above! There is a $15 cover. Call for cover/minimum information.

Mystical yet fiery, passionately romantic yet supremely cool - you hear those first few notes from that instantly recognizable tenor sax, and know you're in the unique musical world of Gato Barbieri. His enduring career has covered virtually the entire jazz landscape, from free jazz with trumpeter Don Cherry and avant-garde in the mid-'60s, to film scoring and his ultimate embrace of Latin music throughout the '70s and '80s. Barbieri began playing tenor saxophone with his own band in the late '50s and moved to Rome with his Italian-born first wife Michelle in 1962, where he began collaborating with Cherry. The two recorded two albums for Blue Note: Complete Communion (1965) and Symphony for Improvisers (1966), both of which are considered classics of free group improvisation. He also collaborated with Steve Lacy, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Airto Moreira, Chico O'Farrell, and Lonnie Liston Smith during this period. The legendary musician played with Charles Mingus from 1960 to 1972 and has recorded with artists from Art Farmer to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. McPherson was greatly influenced by Charlie Parker (and featured in Clint Eastwood's film Bird), and though he can readily channel the bop fury of Bird and his contemporaries, McPherson has also developed a powerful style of his own, both as a great composer and an elite soloist. Tonight's outstanding band features the equally storied Chuck McPherson on drums, young Israeli guitarist Yotam Silberstein on guitar, New York staple Steve Nelson on vibraphone, and prolific performer and composer Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass.
