Having grown up in a family and community of musicians in New Orleans, Payton has built his unique voice by melding a post-bop foundation, a heavy emphasis on groove, a soulful history and various experimental elements. Payton's new ensemble "Action Affirmative" is a return of sorts - to the fiery postbox of "Nick@Night" (Verve Records, 2000) for which he has received much acclaimed - but with a new lineup of stellar collaborators.
