FLORIDA: AMANDA MCBROOM MAKES ROYAL ROOM DEBUT
Amanda McBroom makes her club debut at THE ROYAL ROOM at THE COLONY HOTEL (155 Hammond Avenue, Palm Beach, FL - 561-659-8100) on Tuesday through Saturday, February 25th through March 1st at 8:30 pm. Amanda McBroom has been called "... the greatest cabaret performer of her generation, an urban poet who writes like an angel and has a voice to match." Her name first came to the attention of the music public when Bette Midler's version of Amanda's song 'The Rose' hit number one all over the world in 1979. But it was Amanda's performance of her own song on the Golden Globes (she won), Grammys (she didn't) and The Tonight Show that launched her career as a singer as well as songwriter. Her songs have been recorded by the likes of Leanne Rimes, Barry Manilow, Judy Collins, Barbara Cook, Anne Murray, Harry Belafonte, Betty Buckley, Stephanie Mills, The Manhattan Transfer and Donny Osmond. As a singer, she has wowed audiences in concert halls around the world including Carnegie Hall in New York, the FORD Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, Wolftrap and Kennedy Center (where she sang with the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marvin Hamlisch) in Washington DC. LOS ANGELES: BETTY BRYANT AT THE GARDENIA
Betty Bryant performs at THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on Saturday, March 1st at 9:00 pm. Miss Bryant, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, is a revered pianist/singer who brings a solid piano technique, a light, swinging touch, and a skilled vocal approach to her music - whether playing the blues, delivering obscure cabaret gems, or romping though serious jazz compositions. SAN FRANCISCO: WILL DOWNING AT YOSHI'S
Will Downing will appear at YOSHI'S(1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Saturday, March 1st at 8:00 pm and Sunday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm. In his two decade recording career, the Brooklyn native has carved for himself a solid career as one of the leading purveyors of unapologetic, unabashed romantic music. And while this has not translated to crossover success - or even to broad urban radio success - it has gained for Downing a solid musical legacy and a rabidly loyal following. Downing had his first national exposure as a popular backing vocalist in the '80s before signing with Island Records. He recorded two modestly successful albums and had a minor hit with a cover of "A Love Supreme" before releasing his breakout 1991 album A Dream Fulfilled. It was a marvelous disc that showed Downing not only possessed a fine baritone voice but that he was also was an excellent song stylist, deftly handling such diverse songs as War's "The World Is A Ghetto" and Paul Davis's "I Go Crazy" and providing a stunning, definitive version of Angela Bofill's "I Try." Both the "I Try" single and the album hit the Urban top 25, and critical acclaim for the disc abounded. There is a $55-$80 cover.
SAN FRANCISCO: DJ AFRIKA BAMBAATAA AT YOSHI'S
Legendary hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa performs at YOSHI'S(1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Saturday, March 1st at 10:30 pm. Afrika Bambaataa was an important rap-music pioneer who became a forgotten elder statesman as rap evolved. Bambaataa, who took his name (which means "affectionate leader") from a movie about Zulu warriors, quit the notorious Black Spades street gang in the mid-1970s and formed Zulu Nation, a music-oriented "youth organization." Among the members who became minor rap luminaries were DJs Red Alert, Jazzy Jay, and Whiz Kid, as well as Afrika Islam, who went on to work with Ice-T. Open dance floor. SAN FRANCISCO: PAULA WEST IN EXTENDED RUN AT YOSHI'S
San Francisco based jazz vocalist Paula West will perform at FEINSTEIN'S AT THE NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 866-663-1063) in a 4-week engagement opening on Thursday, February 13th, with shows running Thursday through Sunday, through March 9th. Known for her rich, powerful contralto voice, West will present an all-new show featuring an eclectic range of songs - from memorable jazz standards by Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart, to contemporary American classics by Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Accompanied by her four-piece band, West will take San Francisco audiences on a musical journey through the ages. Born into a Marine Corps family in San Diego, California, Paula West was initially exposed to classical music. It wasn't until college that West began listening to jazz singers such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn. After college, West moved to San Francisco, unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. Buying old records from thrift shops, she studied them and then began singing classes. As she became more secure in her talent, she ventured into jam sessions, places where an open mike gave her a chance to perform before an audience. It was at one of these sessions that she met a pianist who would join her in the climb to her own musical identity and her musical success. His name was Ken Muir, and he continues as her accompanist today. West went on to study with Faith Winthrop, developing her unique tone and delivery. She learned how to sustain a note without a vibrato, which is now almost a Paula West trademark.
