BOSTON: BOUBACAR DIABATE AND SAMBALOLO

West African griot singer and traditional multi-instrumentalist, Boubacar Diabate will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Saturday, January 18th at 7:30 pm. Diabate, from Bamako, Mali comes from the Mande lineage. He has combined traditional West African rhythms with modern influences to create his own contemporary Malian griot music. Songwriter, storyteller, guitarist and vocalist, Boubacar brings his original compositions and arrangements to deliver powerful vocals and distinctive guitar melodies, with a unique sound likened to the Kora, a traditional harp made from hardwood and calabash. In Bambara and Manding, Boubacar Diabate sings and plays with his group SambaLolo (John DeCarlo, Guitar; Felix Fantasia, Bass Guitar; Arona Ndiaye, Keyboards; Glen Grant, Drums; Joh Camara, Percussion; Mateja Miljacki, Percussion), creating a full spectrum of traditional to contemporary Malian music, fusing Blues, Jazz, Reggae and Bluegrass. He sings of our common experience of love, life and humanity in the age-old tradition of Griot storytelling through song. There is a $16 cover.

TORONTO: DAVE YOUNG QUINTET: TRIBUTE TO HORACE SILVER

Toronto-based and Winnipeg-born multiple award-winning bassist and composer Dave Young will perform atTHE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday, Friday & Saturday, January 16th, 17th & 18th at 9:00 pm. He is joined by Gary Williamson - piano, Terry Clarke - drums, Kevin Turcotte - trumpet and Perry White - saxophone. Young is, without a doubt, one of Canada's most valuable and beloved musical exports. Whether he's performing as part of a classical symphony, or as an integral member of an iconic jazz trio (with the likes of the late Oscar Peterson), or leading any of his dynamic ensembles, Dave remains a total musician, with artistic soul in abundance. He first began studying the guitar and violin at age ten, but a turn of events at his first gig (a University dance band) compelled him to pick up the bass. Equally comfortable in the worlds of orchestral classical music and jazz, Dave is a multiple threat. As a classical musician, he has been a member of The Edmonton Symphony, The Winnipeg Symphony and The Hamilton Philharmonic. As a jazz artist, he is a chameleon-like bassist, who often shines brightest in collaborative efforts with other musicians. Because of his technical skill, few bassists (jazz or otherwise) are able to dig in, swing hard and still render a lyrical arco solo as Dave can.

BETHESDA: POPA CHUBBY WITH THE COLIN THOMPSON BAND

Popa aka Ted Horowitz will perform at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Saturday, January 18th at 8:00 pm, backed by The Colin Thompson Band. Popa Chubby has the blues again. Nearly 20 years have passed since the good Popa aka Ted Horowitz made a big splash in the blues community with his groundbreaking major label debut, 'Booty And The Beast.' 'Universal Breakdown Blues' is what Horowitz was inspired to craft after dealing with a painful divorce and recovery. The compelling songs feature searing guitar lines and heartfelt lyrics, which recall the lament that inspired such blues icons as Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson. Horowitz digs deep and comes up with some of the most intense songs he has ever written. Horowitz, who impresses with some incendiary guitar runs during 'Universal Breakdown Blues,' moves on as a contemporary blues player. What we need is some raw, powerful, edgy blues and that's just what Popa Chubby renders. We get to chew on some deep, moving, searing cuts that come straight from the soul. There is a $20 cover.
