MELBOURNE'S FAMED BUTTERFLY CLUB CHANGES HANDS

If you actually read all the listings in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE  (and I know many of you skim over them or skip them entirely), you will note that nearly every week we list shows at THE BUTTERFLY CLUB in Melbourne, AU. They always seem to be presenting the most interesting performers and cabaret events, and one of the reasons I try to cover their shows is to give other performers who get the newsletter some ideas for their own shows. We see far too many cabaret shows that are nothing more than Wikipedia entries with songs added, and while these types of shows are often quite "commercial", they do not fully utilize the full breath of cabaret possibilities.

I mention this today because THE BUTTERFLY CLUB changed hands over the weekend. Over the past almost 12 years, the club has become synonymous with cabaret, presenting more than 1,000 new works and discovering and nurturing many performers who are now house-hold names in Australia (and soon around the world) such as Tim Minchin and Eddie Perfect. The sale will allow former owners David Read and Neville Sice to focus on producing the annual Melbourne Cabaret Festival. Longstanding Venue Manager, Alexander Woollard, remains in charge at the venue and all staff positions are secure. All 2011 performer and function bookings have been honored. The new owner, Enter Closer Pty Ltd, is headed by professional performer, composer, teacher and producer, Mr. Simone Pulga.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE takes this opportunity to send special congratulations to David Read and Neville Sice, who saved the club from extinction many years ago and turned it into one of the most exciting and popular venues in all of Australia. And a big welcome to Mr. Pulga, and our best wishes on your new venture. When I personally met Messrs. Read and Sice a few years back, I promised that some day, some how, I would get to Melbourne and Adelaide to see in person the BUTTERFLY CLUB and the ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL. So now I extend that pledge to you as well, and stand ready to continue to promote your cabaret events.
