NYC: PHIL WOODS QUINTET AT BIRDLAND THROUGH SATURDAY

NYC: PHIL WOODS QUINTET AT BIRDLAND

The Phil Woods Quintet will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - ) Tuesday through Saturday, November 16th through 20th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Alto saxophonist Phil Woods has had his own sound since the mid-1950s and is one of the true masters of the bop vocabulary, having lost neither his enthusiasm nor his creativity through the years. The Phil Woods Quintet is arguably one of the best working groups in jazz today and two of the original members of that group, Steve Gilmore and Bill Goodwin, are still playing with him, more than thirty years later. As three-time Grammy winners, the quintet performs both great jazz compositions and American standards, as well as original material composed by the members of the group. Their invaluable contribution to the preservation and enrichment of jazz is documented on The Phil Woods Quintet/Quintet 20th Anniversary Album on Mosaic. Along with Phil Woods on alto sax, the quintet features Bryan Lynch on trumpet, Bill Mays on piano, Steve Gilmore on bass, and Bill Goodwin on drums. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
