LOS ANGELES: OAK STREET BLUES AT THE GARDENIA

Oak Street Blues will perform at THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on Thursday, April 17th at 9:00 pm. An Alternative Folk/Country band based in L.A., whose influences include Tom Petty, Traveling Wilburys, The Flaming Lips, Wilco, and My Morning Jacket, Oak Street Blues was founded by lead singer/guitarist Chris Hall, a 15-year veteran of several bands spanning genres as diverse as Gangsta Rap and Rocakabilly. With bass player Jenny Arias, keyboardist Stephanie Sheer, and drummer Alejandra Arellano, the sound of Oak Street Blues "captures the feeling of what makes a man crazy about women, heartbreak, and '55 Buicks." Energetic and unpredictable, their shows feature a mix of original tunes and eclectic covers. Call for cover/minimum information.

SAN FRANCISCO: SLICK RICK THE RULER AT YOSHI'S

Celebrating The 25th Anniversary of The Great Adventures of Slick Rick,YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) presents 'Slick Rick The Ruler' on Thursday, April 17th at 8:30 pm. Born to Jamaican parents in South Wimbledon, London, on January 14, 1965, Slick Rick, born Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters, who has always been considered ahead of his time, is the most successful British-American rapper in music history. Brilliant word play, the effort-less ability to bring life to the stories he rhymed about, dead on pop-culture references and hilarious one-liners make him the wittiest rapper of all time. There's nothing like the Slick Rick Experience. Every album is a parallel universe where old-time radio and urban culture collide. Aural theater merges with ghetto fantasy. Rick becomes a character actor with voice-throwing chops a ventriloquist would envy and narrative powers greater than Stephen King. In theory, it all seems preposterous - impossible to pull off. But because Rick has such a genuine gift on the mic - dexterity, cleverness, wit, articulation, fluidity - it works like gangbusters. Open Dance Floor. Dinner/Show: $73 Show only: $35.

SAN FRANCISCO: BROADWAY & WEST END STAR SIERRA BOGGESS AT FEINSTEIN'S

Broadway knows her as Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera and as aspiring opera star Sharon Graham in Master Class. London knows her for her Olivier Award-nominated performance in Love Never Dies and as Fantine in Les Miserables. Now, San Francisco audiences will, once again, see a brand new side of this Drama Desk and Olivier Award-nominated actress as she brings back her acclaimed one-woman show, Awakening. One of Broadway's most promising new talents, audiences can expect a range of tunes from songwriters both new and old, and vocals that stretch from the sublime to the divine. Boggess will be joined on-stage by Summer Boggess on cello and Brian Hertz (Musical Director) on piano. An album of Awakening - recorded in August 2013 at 54 Below in New York City - will be available for purchase that evening. There is a $35-$45 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.

BOSTON: RIVERSIDE: DOUGLAS DOXAS SWALLOW

Douglas Doxas Swallow presents 'Riverside' at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Thursday, April 17th at 7:30 pm. Anyone who has followed the career of trumpeter Dave Douglas, knows that he has been strongly influenced by and paid his own tributes to a wide range of music - from Lester Bowie to Mary Lou Williams to Joni Mitchell to Booker Little to Don Cherry and Wayne Shorter. However, few to date know of his admiration for the late clarinetist and erstwhile saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre. Douglas, like Giuffre, constantly reinvents himself, never allowing himself to be defined by one project or association. Similarly, Douglas' main collaborator in Riverside, Canadian saxophonist Chet Doxas, has led a career of great variety - from touring with Canadian pop and folk singers Sam Roberts and Rufus Wainwright to leading bands with Canada's leading jazz players such as Oliver Jones and Guido Basso as well as stints with American jazz stars Maria Schneider, Joe Lovano, Jason Moran, and Bill Stewart. The quartet, co-led by Douglas, on trumpet, and Doxas, on clarinet and tenor saxophone, has a rhythm section comprised of Steve Swallow (a former member of the Jimmy Giuffre 3) on electric bass and Jim Doxas (Chet's brother and frequent collaborator) on drums. Riverside blends a love for improvised music, bluegrass, sacred hymns and Appalachian music to create an aesthetic rooted in both Americana and jazz. There is a $30 cover.

Gazarek's top flight interpretations of the vast and varied American songbook are buoyed by the sensitivity of Nelson's supple command and they have transfixed audiences from New York to Tokyo.
