SWEET LIFE - A NEW CD BY JIM SPEAKE

This recording had a long gestation, starting when Jim was born in Florence Alabama in1945. This was very close to the place where musical magic was to be made, the famous recording studios in Muscle Shoals. By coincidence, Percy Sledge was born in the same little town where his family and Jim lived, Leighton, Alabama. He had a major hit with his first recording in 1966, and the "Muscle Shoals Sound" was firmly established. Jim Speake had music in his life from an early age, because he sang along with his mother when she played the piano and sang. A track of his first recording session at four, can be found on Jim's first CD, "Jim Speake Sings My Generation." It was expected that he would go into the family business of farming. Instead, when Speake went to college, he earned degrees in Business Administration, University of Alabama and ultimately Landscape Architecture, University of Georgia. If he had followed my heart, he would have studied music. That was a road Jim did not take seriously until he moved to New York City in 2000. There, while studying acting and voice, Jim was lucky enough to meet some key people who have been vital to his development as a singer. At H.B. Studio, he met KT Sullivan. KT introduced Jim to Eric Michael Gillett. Eric Michael introduced him to Patrick DeGennaro. Patrick introduced him to Lennie Watts and Steven Ray Watkins. 2015 marked the tenth anniversary of his collaboration with these two talented men. Most of the arrangements on this recording were developed working with this same team. It is not a stretch to say thatSpeake would not have made this recording had he not met Lennie and Steven. He especially appreciates Lennie's support through this journey and also introducing him to Paul Rolnick.

THE DINAH SHORE SHOW - during the month of the legendary singer and TV show host's 100th birthday. Daryl Kojak will be on piano. Macauley's Dinah Shore tribute debuted in 1997 at EightyEights in New York's Greenwich Village and had a long run before moving to Los Angeles' Cinegrill at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. "MWAH!" is an affectionate and humorous look at the life and career of Dinah Shore as seen through the eyes of one of her most ardent fans, someone who sat transfixed in front of his TV during the 1970s watching the "Dinah!" show almost daily. Macauley presents many of Dinah's 92 pop chart hits, ranging from million selling songs to lesser-known standards. Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

Multi-Award-winning New York vocalists KT Sullivan and Jeff Harnar return to THE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL (20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888) on Tuesday, March 1st through Saturday, March 5th, at 8:00 pm with ANOTHER HUNDRED PEOPLE the sequel to last season's Our Time. Together they weave the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim into a tapestry that explores contemporary attitudes on love, loss and laughter with a gender-bending twist. Comprised of songs from Sondheim's hit Broadway shows, including "Company"; "A Little Night Music"; "Into the Woods"; "Sweeney Todd" and "Follies" and Hollywood scores ("Dick Tracy") audiences can expect standards ("Broadway Baby"; "Not a Day Goes By"; "Not While I'm Around"; "Side by Side by Side") and surprises, such as Sondheim's first published song, "How Do I Know?", written when he was 15. West Coast based Sharon McNight reprises her outrageous show from 2001, 'SONGS TO OFFEND ALMOST EVERYONE', which was and still is designed to offend minorities and majorities of every persuasion, at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Sunday, March 6th at 4:00 pm and Thursday, March 10th at 7:00 pm. NYC: URBAN STAGES' MABEL MADNESS MUSICAL CONTINUES, TO RAVE REVIEWS!

Urban Stages (Frances Hill, Founding Artistic Director; Peter Napolitano, Associate Producer) continues its 32nd season with the World Premiere of Mabel Madness, which opened on February 25th, has been garnering rave reviews. The musical tells the dramatic story about the life of the famous cabaret chanteuse, Mabel Mercer, written and performed by Tony Award Winner Trezana Beverley (For Colored Girls...). Co-directed by Frances Hill and Peter Napolitano with musical direction by Tuffus Zimbabwe, Mabel Madness began its Off-Broadway run at URBAN STAGES(259 West 30th Street, NYC - 866-811-4111) with previews on Friday, February 19th, and opened on Thursday, February 25th and running through Sunday, March 20th. Mabel Madness will feature classic songs from Ms. Mercer's repertoire as well as original songs written by the award-winning team of Barry Levitt (composer) and Mr. Napolitano (lyrics).The creative team for Mabel Madness includes Christina Watanabe (Lighting Designer), Nicholas Blade Guldner (Projection Designer), Gail Cooper-Hecht (Costume Designer), Antoinette Mullins (Dramaturg) and Jill Woodward (Production Stage Manager).

Mabel Mercer is frightened! Frightened that this is her last show ... that her long-time friend/ manager is abandoning her ... that she is too old. On stage for probably the last time, this legendary performer, who influenced the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Billie Holiday, confronts the events that has led her to this moment. From a white British mother who refused to acknowledge her black daughter, to vocal mishaps that ultimately led to her signature Story Song style, Mabel reveals all as she prepares to take her final bow.

Trezana Beverley (Playwright, Actress) is the winner of the distinguished Tony Award for her performance on Broadway in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. She has since created a unique signature in the American Theater as a talented actor, director, singer, acting teacher and writer. Trezana is a graduate of New York University Tisch School for the Arts where she studied under Lloyd Richards, Peter Kass, Omar Shapli and Kristin Linklater, as well as the great Polish director Jerzy Grotowsky.

Among the highlights of her distinguished acting career are: Mother Courage; A Raisin In The Sun; Flyin' West; Peer Gynt; Macbeth, Medea, and King Lear (as a man). In film: Beloved (with Oprah Winfrey); Resurrection; Carolina Skeletons and Margaret and the Saturday Night Ladies. Her music and writing skills have been displayed in her one-woman shows The Spirit Moves; Constant Star and currently, Mabel Madness, the dramatic story with music about the life of the famous cabaret chanteuse Mabel Mercer. Highlights of her directing credits include: Spell #7; Native Son; For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf; In The Blood; From The Mississippi Delta, Pecong; The Trojan Woman, Salome, Yellowman, The Bluest Eye; Blue Door; Mask in The Mirror an Opera, and most recently an all-female production of Shakespeare's Othello. Trezana is currently on the guest directing drama faculty of the Juilliard School in New York City and is the founding artistic director of The Trezana Projects - a theater company that uses dance choreography to express dramatic plays Trezana is a civic minded artist who often speaks before church and youth groups Her work has been cited in American Theater Magazine and Towards A Poor Theater (Simon & Shuster).

Among other distinguished awards are: Mademoiselle Woman of The Year, The Audelco Recognition Award and The Theater World Award. She has received two Citizen's Citations for her contribution to the American Stage as a distinguished citizen of Baltimore, Md and has also been recognized by the New York Senate and the New York State Assembly for her artistic contributions to the community. Celebrate new beginnings and the return of Spring! Join host and Helpusadopt.org board member Robin Westle, headliner Carole Demas, best known for creating the role of 'Sandy' in the original Broadway production of Grease, and co-star of the popular and wildly successful children's television show "The Magic Garden" and special guest stars Stephen Mitchell Brown of Broadway's Jekyll and Hyde, Leah Jennings (Metrostar finalist), Eva Kantor (Metrostar finalist, NY Cabaret Convention), Valerie Lemon, concert soloist for the late Marvin Hamlisch, and Sage Melcher (Great American Songbook HS and Academy Competition finalist) at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) on Monday, March 28th at 7:00 pm. Presented by drag chanteuse Arnaldo!, the Seattle festival debuted in 2008 at Julia's On Broadway. In 2011, the Seattle festival expanded into its current venue at Egan's Ballard Jam House, where it ran in 2015 every weekend in March, featuring an exhilarating variety of West Coast performers. A MARCH IS CABARET MONTH SPECIAL EVENT

The 31st Annual Bistro Awards gala will be held on Tuesday, March 8th at 6:30 pm at GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd Street, NYC - 212-367-9000). As is the Bistro Awards tradition, the evening will feature performances by the winners. Jazz Greats Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, and Janis Siegel are among the winners to be honored at the event. Favorites Christine Andreas, Sharon McNight, Jarrod Spector, Kelli Barrett, KT Sullivan, and Jeff Harnar will also be recognized. Hosting this year's 31st annual show is Jason Graae, whose varied career spans Broadway, Off Broadway, opera, television, and film. He is a four-time Bistro Award recipient for his various one-man shows which have toured all over the country and for his special musical material. This will be the fourth year in a row that the Bistro Awards show will be under the directorial helm of Shellen Lubin. A director, songwriter, performer, and vocal and acting coach, she has been in the forefront of attaining parity for women in the arts.

Mr. Hendricks is receiving the ASCAP Bob Harrington Lifetime Achievement Award. He co-founded the pioneering vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross in the '50s. Together with Dave Lambert and Annie Ross, he mastered the art of vocalese - that of adding lyrics to instrumental compositions and instrumental solos, as well as complex vocal treatments for the Big Band arrangements of the likes of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Their work influenced countless well-known singers, including Van Morrison, Al Jarreau, and Bobby McFerrin. As a solo vocalist, he has recorded several albums, made frequent television appearances, and toured extensively internationally, and he has served multiple times on the Kennedy Center Honors committee. Being honored with a Bistro Award for her Outstanding Contributions to the World of Jazz, Ms. Ross was part of the famed Lambert, Hendricks & Ross trio for six years. After leaving the group, she ran a jazz club in London and has enjoyed a long career in film and theatre. She has been a celebrated solo jazz vocalist for many years. Ms. Siegel has been a member of Manhattan Transfer since 1973 and is also an acclaimed solo jazz vocalist; she is being recognized for Sustained Excellence in Jazz Performance and Recording,

Four of the top cabaret greats are in the Bistro spotlight this year. Being honored with a Bistro Award for Ongoing Artistry in Cabaret and Concert Performance is Christine Andreas who has maintained an international career in theatre, television, concert halls, and clubs. Sharon McNight, the powerhouse cabaret and theatre star, is being recognized for her Commanding Cabaret Artistry, while KT Sullivan and Jeff Harnar, along with director Sondra Lee, are being singled out for their extraordinary talents that were on view in "Another Hundred People," the Bistro Awards' pick for Outstanding Musical Revue. Jarrod Spector, who received a 2015 Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of Barry Mann in the Carole King musical Beautiful, will share the Bistro honor for Major Engagement with his wife, Kelli Barrett, for their appearance at Feinstein's/54 Below.

This year's Ira Eaker Special Achievement Award - given to an outstanding performer on the rise and named after Back Stage's co-founder, co-publisher, and first nightclub critic - goes to Australian transplant, jazz pianist, arranger, music director, and composer Matt Baker, who has received increasing attention and acclaim since arriving here a few years ago.

Molly Pope, a strikingly original performer and personality, is being feted as Creative Cabaret Artist. In the Entertainer category, Charlie Johnson is being recognized for his talents as a singer, storyteller, and showman. Aaron Morishita is being honored for his CD "Singing Sondheim," which makes even familiar Sondheim songs seem fresh and new.

A number of outstanding vocalists caught the Awards Committee's attention this year: In her entertaining show "Traveling Solo," Ann Dawson told of her career and life with pluck, humor, and musical savvy. Rob Sutton's offering, "Not the Boy Next Door," was deeply personal and charming, and filled with splendid singing. And Dawn Derow impressed with her glorious voice and character-rich interpretations in "Legit," her program of operatic arias.

The Bistro Awards honors Urban Stages' ambitious "Winter Rhythms" series, produced by Peter Napolitano as a benefit for Frances Hill's Urban Stages' Outreach Program, which for several years has presented a varied mix of shows from the worlds of cabaret, jazz, and theatre.

Cabaret Life Productions presents cabaret veteran Jeff MacAuley at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Tuesday, March 1st at 7:00 pm. MacAuley, who over the past few years has scored with two highly praised shows paying tribute to songwriter Norman Gimbel and composer Henry Mancini, is bringing back his 1998 Backstage Bistro Award Winner for "Outstanding Theme Show" - MWAH! THE DINAH SHORE SHOW - during the month of the legendary singer and TV show host's 100th birthday. Daryl Kojak will be on piano. Macauley's Dinah Shore tribute debuted in 1997 at EightyEights in New York's Greenwich Village and had a long run before moving to Los Angeles' Cinegrill at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. "MWAH!" is an affectionate and humorous look at the life and career of Dinah Shore as seen through the eyes of one of her most ardent fans, someone who sat transfixed in front of his TV during the 1970s watching the "Dinah!" show almost daily. Macauley presents many of Dinah's 92 pop chart hits, ranging from million selling songs to lesser-known standards. One of cabaret's best raconteurs, Macauley offers entertaining and informative tidbits about Dinah's professional and personal life in this fun, slightly skewed, but always warm look at the life and career of one of this country's less examined pop icons.
