TONIGHT SF: DEBO BAND AT YOSHI'S

Debo Band will perform on Wednesday, July 17th at 8:00 pm at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600). The band is an 11-member group led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Since its inception in 2006, the band has won rave reviews for its groundbreaking take on Ethiopian pop music (think Ethiopiques), which incorporates traditional scales and vocal styles alongside American soul and funk rhythms and instrumentation reminiscent of Eastern European brass bands. Debo have toured Ethiopia twice, appearing at both the Ethiopian Music Festival in Addis Ababa and Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar, the largest music festival in East Africa. In North America they've shared stages with Gogol Bordello, Amadou & Mariam, Grupo Fantasma, The Family Stone, and Ethiopian great Tilahun Gessesse. There is a $22 cover.

TONIGHT CHICAGO: LIVE JAZZ WEDNESDAYS AT VU SUA WITH ELAINE DAME

Jazz Singer Elaine Dame is thrilled to announce her new musical endeavor: 'Live Jazz Wednesdays' to be celebrated weekly at VU SUA (2925 North Halsted, Chicago, IL - 773-360-8816) from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. She will be appearing, along with featured guitarist Kyle Asche, at Lakeview's newest French-influenced Vietnamese restaurant. For more than 15 years, Ms. Dame has headlined the finest venues in Chicago, the Midwest and the nation. Her debut recording Comes Love, on Chicago's own blujazz record label was released to wide critical acclaim and international radio play. Since 1998, Kyle Asche has become an integral and in-demand guitarist on the Chicago jazz scene. Mr. Asche was awarded as a semi-finalist in the prestigious 2005 Thelonious Monk International Guitar Competition, and also released his debut recording that year to rave reviews. The former Erwin space now houses Vu Sua, a French-influenced Vietnamese restaurant from Macku Chan, the chef/owner of Macku Sushi in Lincoln Park. The Vietnam-born chef incorporates Asian influences into dishes such as a crepe with seafood, bean sprouts, onions, and fish sauce and lobster dumplings. There is no cover charge, no minimum.

Still barely in his 30s, the Louisiana born axeman and songsmith has been selling millions of albums, throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens. He met Stevie Ray Vaughn at 7, shared the stage with New Orleans legend Bryan Lee at 13. As an adult, he continues to create genre- defining blues-infused rock n' roll. Tickets are $65.

Reflecting more than two centuries of collective experience in blues, country, gospel and rock, the awesome aggregation is nothing less than a roots music "super group" of the first order. The Blues Broads, the group's recording debut is a CD/DVD combination set, recorded live, that will be released by Delta Groove in September. The Blues Broads CD/DVD includes both familiar songs associated with their respective august careers as well as newly written material that underscores the creative might of these four remarkable women. Seu Jorge will be performing songs from his new CD and other favorits at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Wednesday & Thursday, July 17th & 18th, plus Saturday & Sunday, July 20th & 21st and Tuesday and Wednesday, July 23rd & 24th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Listening to this remarkable album for the first time you'll surely be struck first by the deep, soul-piercing voice of that great Brazilian singer, Seu Jorge.Many may know him as an actor for his screen-stealing performances in the likes of Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic, Fernando Meirelles' City Of God and Walter Salles' Linha de Passe, but Seu has known since he was a child that we was destined to sing. He's a Brazilian singer who speaks the truth through samba, to paraphrase a well-known Seu Jorge quote. But this project is about a band: Almaz. Drummer Pupillo and guitarist Lucio Maia from the stalwart Nacao Zumbi; bassist and composer Antonio Pinto from the soundstages of movies starring Seu Jorge. They came together naturally to record a song for a Salles film; they enjoyed the experience so much that they recorded an entire album of music that inspired them. Songs famous within the Brazilian diaspora mesh with classic American and European soul songs begging for a bit of psychedelic samba. They enlisted producer and fellow Brazileiro Mario C. (Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson) to put the finishing touches on the project. Their album is both warm and dark; psychedelic and yet grounded, uplifting but at times somber. To listen to it is to join them in the studio, where the only bandleader is the music and the only agenda is to follow your heart. Call for cover/minimum information.

54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) presents BACKSTAGE, Broadway's Tuesday night cocktail party/songfest, hosted by Susie Mosher at 10:30 pm. Musical Director Brad Simmons keeps the house jumping from the piano, while host Mosher guides the crowd through an evening of music, mayhem and full throttle belting. Special guests from hit Broadway shows drop in to perform. Members of the "Backstage repertory company", featuring some of New York's most exciting musical theatre talent, are on hand each week to sing everything from Schwartz to Sondheim. Special guest stars on July 16th are Jackie Arnold (Priscilla Queen of the Desert), Anya Marina (recording artist), Celisse Henderson (Godspell, In Transit), James Brown-Orleans (The Lion King), The Stone Brothers, and Kate Shindle (Wonderland, Legally Blonde). No cover charge, $20 food/drink minimum.

The Youngjoo Song Trio (Youngjoo Song, piano; Vicente Archer, bass; Henry Cole, drums) and special guest vocalist Sachal Vasandani will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday, July 16th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Young joo Song is one of Korea's leading Jazz pianists. After graduating Berklee College of Music and Manhattan School of Music, she was able to exponentially climb Korea's Jazz charts in record sales and popularity where she then had multiple opportunities to perform with some of the most prominent artists from both Korea and the USA. Her prompt escalation in the Jazz world enabled her to record eight albums with distinguished labels such as EMI, Warner and Sony of which "Free to Fly" was nominated for the Korean Music award in 2009, and "Love Never Fails" which won Korea's "Best Jazz Album" in 2010. Her new album "Tale of a City" won the "Best Jazz Performance" at the 2012 Korean Music Award. Young joo Song recorded and performed with some of the most prominent jazz musicians; including Steve Wilson, Mark Turner, Seamus Blake, Gretchen Parlato, Kendrick Scott, Marcus Gilmore, Vicente Archer, Rogerio Boccato. There is a $15-$25 cover.
