NYC: A LITTLE KNIGHT MUSIC WITH JULIE GOLD

THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) presents A LITTLE KNIGHT MUSIC with Julie Gold on Friday, April 1st, at 7:00 pm. Julie Gold's life was changed when she composed the masterpiece "From a Distance" on her Knight piano. On February 20, 1991, Julie won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. On February 21, 2014, Julie Gold extended an open invitation to her composer friends to spend one hour each at the newly-restored "Magic Knight" piano, to see if they could access some of the piano's magic. Her only requirements were that they did not bring any preexisting ideas, just an open mind and heart. Since then, dozens of Julie's friends have come from across the country to take her up on her offer, spending their own magical hour at the special instrument. Now, in celebration of Julie's 60th birthday, those composers will gather together for the first time to perform their songs, and thank Julie for the gift she has given them. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

HOTLINE MEMBER CABARET EVENT TONIGHT IN DUNELLEN, NJ: PEACHES AND CRIME BRING THEATRE AND MUSIC BACK TO RADIO THEATER - AS ADVERTISED IN CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

HOTLINE MEMBER CABARET EVENT TONIGHT IN DUNELLEN, NJ: PEACHES AND CRIME BRING THEATRE AND MUSIC BACK TO RADIO THEATER - AS ADVERTISED IN CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
You Choose The Action Murder Mystery Before Live Audience

For years, the all-original Vaudeville variety musical act Peaches and Crime has been bringing a revival of a vibrant, varied, and unpredictable stage art for to stages across New York and beyond. But on Saturday, April 23rd at 9:00 pm, Peaches and Crime will bring their special brand of macabre music and wit to ROXY & DUKEIS ROADHOUSE (745 Bound Brook Road, Dunellen, NJ - 732-529-4464) reviving yet another neglected American art form - a live radio play, fresh from its premier at Manhattan's exclusive FEINSTEINS/54 BELOW cabaret. For decades, live radio drama and comedy broadcasts were the American public's principle and most easily-available form of home entertainment. Before television became practical but after the movies drove many Vaudevillians away from successful touring stage careers, radio brought the country's greatest performers into the homes of the public while leaving space for the listener's visual imagination to work. The comedies were invariably performed before a live audience, with the actors holding scripts and wearing street clothes, but nonetheless bringing their characters to life with the energy of live theatre. Aware that in Dunellen their primary listenership will be sitting in front of them rather than listening at home, Peaches and Crime have added an audience participation element to the proceedings, pausing the play at several key points to allow the audience to decide which choices characters will make and what course the action will take. There is a $12 cover in advance ($20 cash cover at door) - available at https://www.showclix.com/event/peaches-and-crime

HOTLINE MEMBER CABARET EVENT APRIL 12 & 16 IN NYC: CD RELEASE EVENT FOR 'SWEET LIFE' - A NEW CD BY JIM SPEAKE - AS ADVERTISED IN CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

HOTLINE MEMBER CABARET EVENT APRIL 12 & 16 IN NYC: CD RELEASE EVENT FOR 'SWEET LIFE' - A NEW CD BY JIM SPEAKE - AS ADVERTISED IN CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

Jim Speake will celebrate the release of his latest CD - "SWEET LIFE" at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) on Tuesday, April 12th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 16th at 4:00 pm. The show is Directed by Lennie Watts with Musical Direction by Steven Ray Watkins and the SRW Band. Jim will be performing all of the songs from the new recording. This recording had a long gestation, starting when Jim was born in Florence Alabama in1945. This was very close to the place where musical magic was to be made, the famous recording studios in Muscle Shoals. By coincidence, Percy Sledge was born in the same little town where his family and Jim lived, Leighton, Alabama. He had a major hit with his first recording in 1966, and the "Muscle Shoals Sound" was firmly established. Jim Speake had music in his life from an early age, because he sang along with his mother when she played the piano and sang. A track of his first recording session at four, can be found on Jim's first CD, "Jim Speake Sings My Generation." It was expected that he would go into the family business of farming. Instead, when Speake went to college, he earned degrees in Business Administration, University of Alabama and ultimately Landscape Architecture, University of Georgia. If he had followed my heart, he would have studied music. That was a road Jim did not take seriously until he moved to New York City in 2000. There, while studying acting and voice, Jim was lucky enough to meet some key people who have been vital to his development as a singer. At H.B. Studio, he met KT Sullivan. KT introduced Jim to Eric Michael Gillett. Eric Michael introduced him to Patrick DeGennaro. Patrick introduced him to Lennie Watts and Steven Ray Watkins. 2015 marked the tenth anniversary of his collaboration with these two talented men. Most of the arrangements on this recording were developed working with this same team. It is not a stretch to say thatSpeake would not have made this recording had he not met Lennie and Steven. He especially appreciates Lennie's support through this journey and also introducing him to Paul Rolnick. There is a $15 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.

NYC: CELEBRATE JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG HOUSE MUSEUM - APRIL 23rd - 30th

NYC: CELEBRATE JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG HOUSE MUSEUM - APRIL 23rd - 30th

Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month at the LOUIS ARMSTRONG HOUSE MUSEUM (34-56 107th Street, Corona, Queens, NY - 718-478-8274) and the 60th Anniversary of Edward R. Murrow's film 'Satchmo the Great'. Visitors to the Louis Armstrong House Museum will get a rare treat this April to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month. The museum will give all visitors a rare print of Louis's first arrival in Africa in 1956, a tour immortalized in Edward R. Murrow's film, Satchmo the Great (while supplies last).  City University of New York (CUNY) students will enjoy free admission all month long and New York City public school children and their families will enjoy free admission during Spring Break, April 23rd through April 30th. This rare photo from the museum's Ernie Anderson Collection depicts a major moment in Louis Armstrong's career: his arrival in the Gold Coast of Africa (soon to become the independent nation of Ghana) in May 1956. Armstrong had never been to Africa before and when he arrived, his airplane was met by a mob of spectators, including thirteen trumpeters playing a traditional African song, "Sly Mongoose," retitled "All for You, Louis" for the occasion. The photo depicts the moment Armstrong pulled out his horn to play along, a momentous meeting of the two cultures. It was saved by Armstrong's longtime publicist Ernie Anderson and was acquired by the Louis Armstrong House Museum in 2012. The photo has never been exhibited or published until now for Jazz Appreciation Month 2016. It stands a special reminder of Armstrong's power as America's "Ambassador of Goodwill," an appropriate message for Jazz Appreciation Month and International Jazz Day. International Jazz Day, Saturday, April 30th, there will be a Special Screening of Satchmo the Great. The museum's Jazz Appreciation Month programming culminates with a special Jazz Day Screening of Edward R. Murrow's Satchmo the Great in partnership with the MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK. Satchmo the Great was created by famed broadcaster Edward R. Murrow who followed Louis Armstrong around the world, filming him in Paris, Sweden, Switzerland, England, and Africa, before returning back to New York for an unforgettable performance of "St. Louis Blues" with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Leonard Bernstein. This film captures "Ambassador Satch" at his 1950s peak, entertaining 100,000 fans in the Gold Coast of Africa, playing his big hit "Mack the Knife" in London, and humorously explaining the definition of a "cat" in a rollicking Paris interview with Murrow. Ricky Riccardi, Director of Research Collections at the Louis Armstrong House Museum, will introduce the film, which has not been commercially available since its original theatrical release in 1956. For the screening, tickets are $16 ($12 for seniors and students) and can be reserved online at The MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK or at 212-534-1672.

SWEET LIFE - A NEW CD BY JIM SPEAKE

DUNELLEN, NJ: PEACHES AND CRIME BRING THEATRE AND MUSIC BACK TO RADIO THEATER
