CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

Kevin Mahogany will celebrate 20 years as a recording artist at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080), Tuesday through Saturday, March 12th through 16th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. With eleven CDs as a leader, and quite a few as a sideman, Kevin Mahogany has proved to be the quintessential jazz vocalist. Kevin comes to Birdland to celebrate his 20th anniversary as a recording artist. His 1993 debut "Double Rainbow," an album of seldom-heard ballads, bop tunes and blues was met with instant acclaim. In 1995 Kevin joined with Warner Brothers and the next year released the self-titled CD,"Kevin Mahogany". "Another Time, Another Place", My Romance" and "Portrait of Kevin Mahogany" closed out the next three years of Kevin at Warner Brothers. After a short hiatus, Kevin returned to the scene in 2002 with Telarc records and released "Pride and Joy," a tribute to the music of the great Motown era. The shaping of these tunes became very important to Kevin. The latest venture for Kevin Mahogany has him stretching his wings and adding the title of "entrepreneur," to his resume. He has started his own label, "MAHOGANY JAZZ " with his partner Rick Cioffi, and has two projects scheduled for release: "Kevin Mahogany Big Band" and "To Johnny Hartman," a tribute to the incredible vocalist of the 1940-70s. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

WBAI NEEDS YOUR HELP - URGENT - STATION IN EMERGENCY MODE

We received an urgent message from David Kenney regarding WBAI - which carries his EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN show on Sunday evenings. (see listing below) The station is in emergency mode, needing to raise at least $200,000 by the end of March or else risk losing their lease on the antenna at the top of Empire State forever. Your contribution will go specifically to the fund set up for listeners to help prevent WBAI radio from complete shutdown. By helping us meet the rising and accumulated costs for our transmitter at the Empire State Building you assure that WBAI will continue on the air.
Our dire circumstances are due to a number of contributing factors:
1) The 2008 economic collapse
2) The devastation from Hurricane Sandy which forced WBAI to leave their downtown location and move to temporary administrative quarters and broadcast studios.
3) The loss of revenue when our Fall Fund Drive was curtailed because of the Hurricane evacuation.
4) Funds are already needed to establish WBAI in a new permanent location.
Please go to http://www.give2wbai.org and donate whatever you can afford.

Liebert has released over 20 albums and received more than 30 gold and platinum awards. There is a change in the weather and sound for Ottmar Liebert's release entitled "Dune." Magic men are said to be drawn to the desert sands. Sometimes they come as sculptors like Christo that put up strange and beautiful environments that inspire. Sometimes they come as Native American medicine men or old Japanese Kyoto masters to meditate and postulate. And sometimes, just plain and simple great artists disguised as guitar players. Liebert's new release "Dune" sits firmly in the crosshairs of it all. Random beauty - airy, rhythmic and sometimes funky; sounds to put you inside of full and empty spaces, at the same time. Ottmar is always exceptionally brilliant and mysterious. There is a $45 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
