NYC: JOE'S PUB CELEBRATES THE DRAMA CLUB: 50 YEARS OF FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE WITH EL TEATRO

In 1965, on the picket lines of Cesar Chavez's Delano Grape Strike, Luis Valdez founded El Teatro Campesino when he and a group of workers began producing short skits or "actos" to dramatize the conditions of migrant farmworkers, with the workers themselves playing the parts. The company went on to work with Peter Brook, win Obie Awards, and present the first play by a Latino writer on Broadway, Valdez's Zoot Suit, the film version of which would also earn a Golden Globe nomination for Best Musical or Comedy. To celebrate the company's 50th Anniversary, Public Forum presents two of those original actos as part of its celebrated Drama Club series with a cast of major Latino talents and thinkers, including Valdez and his son Lakin Valdez, artist-in-residence with Teatro Campesino, as well as journalist Maria Hinojosa, spoken word artist and playwright Lemon Andersen, director Edward Torres, and political consultant Luis A. Miranda, Jr. With immigration and the plight of the working class once more in the news, these sharp, funny plays will provoke an illuminating discussion into whether art can change social policy and how protest can also be poetry. There is a $20-$50 cover - no minimum.

NYC: TODD MURRAY IN "CROON: WHEN A WHISPER BECAME A SONG"

Crooner Todd Murray presents "CROON: When a Whisper Became A Song" at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Monday, April 13th at 7:00 pm. Before the advent of the microphone, being heard in a public setting meant the performer not only had to sing well ... but loudly. The art of song interpretation was limited by acoustics and the singer's ability to belt. The introduction of electrified amplification brought about a new performance technique, a style so intimate you swore that Bing Crosby was sitting next to you. This new technique, at times thought to be scandalous, was called "crooning." Todd Murray is a respected international interpreter of The American Songbook. His deep, heartfelt baritone caresses the gorgeous melodies and lyrics of Rogers and Hart, Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach and Leonard Cohen with vocals reminiscent of Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby. Murray takes the audience from the time before the microphone through each decade since. The show has been lauded from New York to LA, and his CD's and song writing have garnered rave reviews. Murray is supported by veteran New York City musicians Alex Rybeck on piano, Steve Doyle on bass, Sean Harkness on guitar, and Dan Gross on drums. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
