As she pursued a career as corporate executive, she chose to explore her dream of being a performing musician, starting with singing lessons in 1988. Training with an instructor who later became her husband, she followed late nights at the office with open mics at two of the most famed of New York's cradles of singing talent, the legendary Village Gate in Greenwich Village and Brandy's on the upper East Side.
