NYC: BARB JUNGR REPRISES "MAN IN THE LONG BLACK COAT"

Barb Jungr's acclaimed all-Bob Dylan show, "Man in the Long Black Coat," returns toTHE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) for a three-week theatrical run Tuesdays through Saturdays, April 10th through 28th at 7:00 pm (Saturdays at 9:30 pm). "Man in the Long Black Coat," premiered in October, 2011. Best-known for her eye-opening deconstructions of songs by American rockers, Jungr has been attracting growing international attention for boldly adding new names to the Great American Songbook, names like Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, David Byrne, Neil Diamond, Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. And Bob Dylan. By stripping these songwriters' of their recorded accoutrements, the British singer lays them bare, proving that many of these rockers are not a breed apart from predecessors like Gershwin, Kern, Mercer and Berlin. Varla Jean Merman will appear in her new show "The Book of Merman" on Tuesdays through Sundays, April 17th through 29th at 8:00 pm (Sundays at 7:00 pm) at RRAZZ ROOM at THE HOTEL NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-394-1189). She will be accompanied by Tom Shaw (piano) and Roberta Drake (drums). Jeffery Roberson aka Varla Jean Merman just recently starred in Willard Beckham's new musical Lucky Guy opposite Emmy Winner Leslie Jordan in NY at the Little Schubert Theatre. He also just completed shooting the feature film Varla Jean and The Mushroomheads which he wrote, starred in and produced. Jeffery guest starred as Varla Jean on Ugly Betty last year in the final season of the show. Grammy Award-winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill will be performing on Sundays through March atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) with shows at 9:00 & 11:00 pm. O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. After leading his late father's orchestra for many years, Arturo formed his own band, The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra in order to explore his and other compositions in the panoply of Afro-Latin music. Kathy Beaver, former Artistic Director of Fort Salem Theater, returns to her former home for a third appearance on Saturday, April 14th at 8:00 pm at The MAINSTAGE AT FORT SALEM THEATER (11 East Broadway, Salem, NY - 518-854-9200 - ) in Patsy and Me. a cabaret homage to country great Patsy Cline. Ms. Beaver is a renaissance woman, who for most of her life made her living working in several aspects of show business. When she wasn't running Fort Salem and starring in many of its productions, she was a musical director based in New York City, where she continues to conduct the performance of the Inner Circle show, performed by city politicians and members of the New York City Press Corps. An accomplished professional violinist, Beaver played concerts and orchestra dates until 2006, while performing her dream stage role as Mama Rose in Gypsy, she had an onstage accident that shattered several bones in an arm and wrist and put her playing on hold. With the need to change her professional focus, she made a major life change and became a fight attendant for Jet Blue. She chronicles this transition in her cabaret act, I'm Flying, which opens this month in Manhattan after its three debut performances at Fort Salem in 2010 and 2011. Lucille performed for a number of years in the regional productions of the New Jersey-based Entertainers Theater before developing her first cabaret act. Since her Don't Tell Mama debut in 1999, she has presented seven different one-woman shows at clubs in New York City, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, including Mama Rose's, The Encore, Helen's, Odette's, The Stockton Inn, and Bob Egan's Cabaret Supper Club. She has also appeared as a guest performer in special productions at both the Laurie Beechman Theater and the Metropolitan Room. Lucille is the recipient of the prestigious Hanson Award, presented each year to one individual by the Manhattan Association of Cabaret and Clubs. Her most recent cabaret outings were the critically acclaimed shows, Finding Home and In My Life, A Celebration of Beatles Music. Composer/ singer/ songwriter Michael Omer continues his New York City cabaret debut atDON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Fridays, April 13th & 20th, both shows at 7:00 pm. Michael Omer is a former regular at London's legendary Pizza on the Park and currently at The Pheasantry in Chelsea. A brilliant pianist, he evokes many musical moods: his original "Making (Royal) Whoopee" (new lyrics about the Royal Wedding); the noir-ish, moody "The Not American Beauty"; to jaunty musical monologues "I Don't Remember Names", his lament at a party. Other song titles include "Mr McGee," a specialty number about a topic familiar to many New Yorkers; "Sexy Samba (Decaffinato)" and Dave Frishberg's jazzy "Blizzard of Lies". THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) presents award-winning director and vocalist Eric Michael Gillett, with special guests Cookie Stark and Melanie Vaughan, in his new show "I Won't Sing a Sondheim Song ... Or Will I?" for six performances, on Fridays, April 13th, 20th & 27th at 7:00 pm, and Wednesdays, May 9th & 23rd, also at 7:00 pm. The show celebrates the work of the Tony and Academy Award winning composer/lyricist, Stephen Sondheim. Along with his long-time collaborator and musical director, Jeff Cubeta, Gillett will put his unique stamp on the wildly diverse catalogue of music by one of the theater's most popular and acclaimed contemporary songwriters. Eric Michael Gillett is a MAC and Bistro Award winning vocalist whose shows have included "Cast of Thousands - Gillett Sings Carnelia," "It Takes Two - The Duets of Stephen Sondheim" (with Melanie Vaughan), and his critically lauded collection of radio songs of the past forty years, "Hook, Line & Singer." Eric Michael has been seen on Broadway in the casts of Kiss Me, Kate, Sweet Smell of Success, and The Frogs. Television appearances include "Law & Order," "Ed," and "Law & Order: SVU," and he was also seen in the feature films Maid in Manhattan, My Brother, The Third Testament and The Producers (on-screen and on the soundtrack). "Broadway Sessions" is an evening of musical performances, games, comedy and open mic featuring new Broadway guests each week.
